About the Opportunity:

The Building Engineer is a single class of engineer in the Building Section. The Building Engineer is a registered professional Engineer in the State of Oregon. Incumbents provide engineering expertise to review and comment on plans for building and civil engineering projects of all sizes, types, classifications, and complexities.

Ideal Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs):

  • A highly skilled engineering professional with strong knowledge of structural and civil engineering principles, state and local construction laws, specialty codes, and industry standards.
  • Proficient in interpreting and analyzing structural, architectural, and civil plans, performing technical calculations, and using computer applications for project management.
  • Demonstrates the ability to solve complex engineering problems, ensure code compliance, and provide technical guidance.
  • Excellent communication skills for preparing clear reports, training staff, and collaborating effectively with agencies, contractors, and the public.
  • Capable of representing the County's interests and persuading stakeholders toward compliance.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • A Bachelor's Degree in structural or civil engineering; AND four (4) years of responsible experience in engineering or plans examination.

Special Qualifications:

  • Requires registration as a professional civil or structural engineer with a license to practice in the state of Oregon within six months following appointment.
  • Oregon A level plans examiner certificate, or apply for and pass both the Oregon Inspector Certificate and ICC commercial building plans examiner certificate within six months after appointment.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record per Washington County policy.
