What Your Job Will Be Like

The Information Systems and Operational Technology Solutions department, org 7577, is seeking an experienced business intelligence developer to join our collaborative team supporting Sandia's Neutron Generator and Advanced Manufacturing Enterprise (NGAME). This position is ideally suited for a BI developer who is familiar with discrete manufacturing and lot-based production and experienced in developing solutions from multiple disparate data sources. The successful candidate will be able to enhance manufacturing/smart factory capabilities by designing, maintaining, upgrading, and optimizing BI solutions. Candidates must demonstrate the desire and ability to coordinate and lead small to medium-sized data projects from requirements through delivery. Finally, this individual is flexible, enjoys working on a wide variety of problems, and can adapt to changing priorities and demands.

On any given day, duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Build and maintain SSRS reports and Power BI dashboards using data from Oracle EBS, Solumina MES, Aras Innovator, and custom applications
  • Work with stakeholders to gather requirements, define metrics and KPIs, refine presentation formats, and deliver user-friendly reporting solutions
  • Proactively troubleshoot data anomalies, connectivity problems, and other interruptions to BI functionality
  • Support adoption of BI resources by providing informal training, including walkthroughs, guidance, and suggested best practices for end users
  • Document report logic, metric definitions, and data sources to enable knowledge transfer, ensuring continuity and long-term supportability
  • Contribute to the design, optimization, and ongoing maintenance of operational data store (ODS) and data warehouse capabilities
  • Inform and monitor both live updates and scheduled refreshes of the ODS and customer datamarts, partnering with DBAs to promptly address issues
  • Coordinate with data stewards and system owners to improve data definitions, data quality, and governance practices
  • Ensure, sometimes retroactively, that BI solutions adhere to data governance standards and sound engineering practices, prioritizing role-based access control, modularity, reuse, scalability, and long-term maintainability

The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.

Salary Range

$87,400 - $168,800

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Management Information Systems, or other relevant IT field
  • Included in the above:
    • 3 years of current, hands-on experience supporting diverse manufacturing use cases with business intelligence solutions that guide actions and decision making.
  • Experience with:
    • Designing, developing, and maintaining SSRS reports (including complex layouts, parameters, and subscriptions or scheduled delivery where applicable)
    • Both Oracle and Microsoft SQL (e.g., writing moderately complex queries, joins, views, and basic optimization)
  • Active DOE Q clearance required to start
Qualifications We Desire

  • Master's degree in engineering, computer science, software engineering, management information systems, or other relevant STEM field
  • Manufacturing domain experience (e.g., production operations, equipment/process data, quality/throughput metrics, work centers, routing, WIP, OEE, scrap/rework, and related concepts)
  • Strong understanding of data visualization best practices, KPI definition, and dashboard usability for operational decision-making
  • Ability to troubleshoot performance, refresh, and data integrity issues in BI solutions.
  • Familiarity with:
    • Relational data modeling concepts (star schema, dimensional modeling, normalization vs. denormalization)
    • Sandia's cyber-security policies
  • Experience with:
    • Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle database management systems
    • Integrating data from manufacturing/operational sources (MES, historians, equipment logs) or other enterprise systems
    • Power BI deployment practices (workspaces, permissions, gateways, lifecycle promotion)
  • Exposure to data governance, data cataloguing, and metric standardization practices
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional environment
  • Familiarity with, or certification in, IT or quality frameworks such as ITIL or Lean Six Sigma

The mission-focused work performed by the department is varied, challenging, interesting, strategic, and often visible to upper management. As an embedded capability, department 7577's team members have deep domain knowledge and experience with Sandia's manufacturing systems and processes. Team members also collaborate often with colleagues across Sandia's CIO and Cyber organizations to optimize solutions. The department's offerings include expertise in cyber assurance, Oracle ERP manufacturing software operational support and expertise, custom application development (C# .NET, Java), operational support, and business intelligence and datamart services (utilizing both SQL server and Oracle databases).

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q security clearance to start, or equivalent active security clearance with another U.S. government agency (e.g., DOD). Sandia is required by DOE directive to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.

Position Information

This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.

Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
