THE OPPORTUNITY

Columbia University's Division of Pediatric Cardiology and Department of Pediatrics invites applications for the position of Director of the recently-announced Garrett Isaac Neubauer Center for Research and Innovation in Pediatric Cardiology at the rank of Assistant or Full Professor. Columbia University Irving Medical Center, one of the nation's foremost academic health science center's working together with one of the nation's premier health systems, New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

The Columbia Pediatric Cardiology clinical program is one of the largest in the nation, with over 50 faculty members and an expanding clinical fellowship program which includes advanced fellowships in cardiac imaging, interventional cardiology, cardiac intensive care, pulmonary hypertension, and heart failure/heart transplantation. The division enjoys a strong partnership with congenital heart surgery, led by Dr. Emile Bacha. As a combined heart center, these two teams lead inspiring academic and clinical innovations. The Columbia cardiology program is historically notable for performing the first successful heart transplant in a child, for developing the first comprehensive program dedicated to pediatric pulmonary hypertension, and for completing the first "Domino" heart-valve transplant.

Columbia Pediatric Cardiology is one of nine core sites for the Pediatric Heart Network (PHN), and Columbia cardiology faculty and fellows enjoy research and training opportunities through our membership in PHN. Columbia is also the data coordinating center and administrative core of the Congenital Cardiac Research Collaborative (CCRC), a collaboration across 16 cardiac programs in North America advancing research and quality improvement in high-risk CHD populations.

The division is engaged in a number of key national and international quality improvement and research initiatives including: PC4, PAC3, NPC-QIC, PHTS, ACTION, CCRC, C3PO, CNOC, IMPACT, PPHNET, and PRIISM.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of the Garrett Isaac Neubauer Center for Research and Innovation is a leadership role for an exceptional and visionary candidate dedicated to advancing the field of pediatric cardiology through groundbreaking research. The successful candidate will lead the Center's strategic development, foster interdisciplinary collaborations, and contribute to the academic and research missions of Columbia University.

A major focus of this opportunity is the advancement and mentorship of emerging and junior clinician scientists. The director will create an investigative environment fertile for the development of bold and innovative physician scientists.

The Director will enjoy significant support to advance their own research through the Center. The Director will expand upon the excellent research team and staff that make up the Heart Center Research Core, integrating this team into the larger Center.

The Director is expected to identify partners across the Department of Pediatrics and across VP&S for multidisciplinary collaborative research. The successful candidate will be eligible for appointment within the Columbia Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons at the Associate Professor or Professor rank. The candidate may be eligible for tenured status within VP&S depending on experience, prior success, and VP&S tenure-criteria.

Responsibilities include:




  • Lead and oversee the establishment, strategic direction, and overall operations of the Center for Research and Innovation in Pediatric Cardiology.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive research agenda focusing on cutting-edge basic, translational, and clinical research in pediatric cardiology.
  • Foster a collaborative research environment that encourages partnerships within the Department of Pediatrics, across Columbia University, and with external institutions.
  • Secure and manage extramural funding to support the Center's research initiatives, with an emphasis on securing NIH-level or equivalent grants.
  • Mentor junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, and students in the development of research skills and career progression in pediatric cardiology.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to translate research findings into innovative therapies and practices that improve patient outcomes.
  • Publish high-impact research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at national and international conferences.
  • Serve as a representative of the Center, engaging with stakeholders, philanthropic organizations, and the broader community to enhance the visibility and impact of the Center's work.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS





    • MD, PhD, or equivalent in a relevant field with significant expertise in pediatric cardiology.
    • Demonstrated track record of independent research with a strong publication record.
    • Experience in securing and managing extramural funding, with ongoing or pending applications for basic, translational, or clinical research grants.
    • Proven leadership experience in academic or research settings, with a strong commitment to mentoring and collaboration.
    • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders.
    • A visionary approach to advancing the field of pediatric cardiology through innovative research.
    • Experience and passion for teaching and mentorship, with evidence of fostering successful careers of mentees.
