Overview

The Apparatus Service Technician is responsible for the inspection, testing, maintenance, and repair of electrical apparatus and associated equipment to support the safe and reliable delivery of electric service. This role works in field and shop environments, performing handson technical work on electrical distribution and transmission equipment while adhering to Con Edisons safety, environmental, and operational standards. Technicians support system reliability by troubleshooting equipment issues, performing preventative maintenance, and responding to system emergencies. The role requires close coordination with engineering, operations, and field crews, as well as strict compliance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Possess a high school diploma/GED and a minimum of 3 years' relevant work experience is required for this position. An AAS degree in Electrical Technology and a minimum of 1 year relevant technical experience is preferred.
  • Previous work experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric distribution equipment is preferred.
  • Candidates should have a strong working knowledge of basic AC and DC electrical power theory and circuit analysis.
  • Selected candidates will have knowledge and experience with computer systems and will be able to use them to perform automated testing and prepare spreadsheets and technical reports.
  • Selected applicants will perform testing, troubleshooting, and repairs on multi-bank, and unit substation equipment, overhead equipment, and on various equipment on the electric distribution system.
  • Selected applicants will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and will be required to pass the placement exam and interview.
  • These candidates will also possess excellent verbal and written communications skills and will be required to pass the placement exam and interview. The position may require working various shifts and overtime to meet job schedules. A valid driver's license is required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years relevant technical experience
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Associate's Degree and 1 year relevant technical experience
Relevant Work Experience
  • Less than 2 years Installation, maintenance and repair of electric distribution equipment is preferred.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Driver's License Required
Physical Demands
  • Perform heavy manual labor, i.e. push, pull, and lift up to 50lbs
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions that include, noise, confined spaces, and high elevations
  • Ability to work in inclement weather and adverse conditions (i.e., excessive heat, cold, noise, confined spaces)
  • Stand, walk, lift, climb, bend, kneel, stoop, and/or reach for the duration of the workday
  • Wear necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), i.e. fire-retardant clothing and safety harnesses
  • Work with equipment with a manufacturer weight rating of 350lbs
  • Use equipment with a maximum weight rating of 375lbs when wearing and/or carrying 25lbs of clothing and equipment
Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
