Job Overview:

The Registered Nurse (RN) in the Endoscopy Unit provides comprehensive, patient-centered care across the procedural continuum in a fast-paced, three-room Endoscopy Lab. This role is responsible for implementing the nursing process, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of care for patients undergoing endoscopic and bronchoscopic procedures.

The RN functions as both a clinical leader and patient advocate, ensuring safe, efficient operations of the Endoscopy suites while delivering high-quality care to patients across the lifespan.

Qualifications:

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license - State of New Jersey

  • Minimum 1 year of Endoscopy experience required

  • BLS (CPR) and ACLS certification required

Core Competencies:

  • Strong clinical assessment and critical thinking skills

  • Proficiency in conscious sedation monitoring

  • Knowledge of endoscopic procedures and equipment

  • Excellent communication and patient education skills

  • Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced procedural environment

  • Commitment to patient safety, quality care, and teamwork

Essential Functions:

Clinical Care & Patient Management

  • Perform comprehensive patient assessments for both inpatient and outpatient populations, with a focus on pre-procedure physiological status and readiness

  • Admit patients and provide continuous monitoring pre-, intra-, and post-procedure

  • Monitor patients receiving conscious sedation and respond appropriately to changes in condition

  • Anticipate patient responses during procedures and implement timely clinical interventions

  • Provide thorough pre- and post-procedure education, including discharge instructions and aftercare

Procedural Support

  • Assist physicians during endoscopy and bronchoscopy procedures

  • Prepare and maintain procedural rooms to support efficient workflow and turnaround times

  • Assemble and operate endoscopy video systems with accuracy

  • Prepare, handle, and label specimens in accordance with established protocols

Equipment & Sterilization Management

  • Demonstrate competency in handling endoscopic instruments and specialized equipment

  • Perform post-procedure leak testing prior to scope cleaning

  • Utilize sterilization systems for proper cleansing and high-level disinfection

  • Label and properly store sterilized scopes following protocol

Leadership & Operations

  • Provide leadership in the Endoscopy suite, overseeing room readiness and workflow

  • Supervise care delivery and ensure adherence to clinical standards and safety protocols

  • Participate in post-procedure room turnover to enhance operational efficiency

Patient Experience & Communication

  • Deliver compassionate, patient-centered care while maintaining dignity and modesty

  • Communicate clearly and effectively with patients and families across all age groups

  • Create a therapeutic and supportive environment, adapting communication for pediatric, adult, and geriatric populations

  • Ensure patient understanding of procedures, recovery expectations, and care instructions

Safety & Compliance

  • Implement patient and staff safety measures, including proper positioning and use of protective devices

  • Utilize appropriate safety equipment during procedures involving laser and electrocautery

  • Adhere to infection control standards and regulatory requirements
