Overview

The LifeGuard Air Ambulance Supervisor is responsible for supporting the LifeGuard Manager in development, implementation and evaluation of the care provided in the transport arena which is consistent with the established strategic plan, goals and objectives for Patient Care Services, as well as meeting the standards of the air medical transport industry, Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS), and the Code of Iowa.

The LifeGuard Supervisor supplements the manager in 24-hour management of the program, assuming responsibility as the on-call designee in the absence of the manager. The LifeGuard Supervisor will maintain participation as an active member of the transport team in addition to serving as a resource to team members, both clinically and administratively. The LifeGuard Supervisor will assist in marketing, clinical and outreach education, planning and maintenance of CAMTS accreditation standards, and participate in continuous quality improvement including data collection, analysis, and reporting.

Responsibilities

Leadership and Culture

  • Builds trusting, collaborative relationships with staff, peers, physicians and administration to advance the core patient business strategy both within UPH- St. Lukes as well as with affiliate hospitals and outside Emergency Medical and Fire services.
  • Follows up on patient or partner agency concerns in the absence of the LifeGuard Manager. Notifies LifeGuard Manager or appropriate designee of any concerns that have the potential to escalate or lead to Risk Management concerns.
  • Assists the LifeGuard Manager in assessing program needs and plans, ensuring alignment with the aviation partner and UPH St. Luke's visions and goals.
  • Researches and recommends short and long term strategies to meet goals in both clinical and operational excellence. Assists with the achievement of objectives and necessary modifications for attainment of goals.
  • May be requested to travel to conferences and meetings as a hospital representative. Must be able to make arrangements to attend these as required.
  • Meets regularly with the LifeGuard Manager and LifeGuard Medical Director:
    • Identifies agenda items for the meetings.
    • Meets with the Director of Emergency and Trauma Services as necessary.
    • Includes representatives from other services in the meetings as necessary.
    • Collaborates with the hospital and physicians to determine process improvement needs to advance the partner of choice.
    • Supports LifeGuard Manager and Medical Director leadership in interactions with crew and hospital team members.

Shared Governance

  • Leads regular safety, education, quality and outreach committee activity.
  • Coordinates on-going monthly education events for staff meetings.
  • Participates in quality, educational and patient follow-ups.
  • Assists in the development of policy/procedure and guidelines for safe, efficient operation of LifeGuard as well as guidelines for clinical practice using research and evidence-based practice

Human Resource, Time Management and Leadership Development

  • Assists with program hiring, on-boarding, orientation and on-going assessment and education in conjunction with other facility and company leaders.
  • Produces monthly schedule and provides gap coverage as needed.
  • Is responsible for employee corrective action including coaching or verbal warnings.
  • Collaborate with the manager, applicable leaders, and HR to support employee corrective action of Level III or above.

Compliance (Program Expertise and Regulatory Readiness)

  • The LifeGuard Supervisor is aware of hospital and department compliance for federally funded healthcare programs (e.g. Medicare and Medicaid) regarding fraud, waste and abuse. Brings any questions or concerns regarding compliance to the immediate attention of department or hospital administrative staff.
  • Demonstrates compliance to regulatory aspects of transport according to Iowa Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) as well as the Illinois Bureau of EMS.
  • Maintains a constant state of readiness.
  • Demonstrates awareness and working knowledge of Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport System (CAMTS) standards for air medical transport and ensures program policies, procedures, and operations meet or exceed the current accreditation standards.
  • Purposefully conducts all aspects of the job in an ethical manner in support of the hospital's commitment to ethical behavior in all areas of personal and professional activity.
  • Successfully completes hospital-wide orientation, annual hospital competencies and department specific competencies.
  • Provides insights for root cause analysis as needed.

Expense Management

  • Is responsible for identifying needs of program that will have an impact on budget and communicating needs to the manager for budgeting.
  • Assists manager in overseeing the budgetary monitoring, evaluation and action planning to ensure departmental budget compliance
  • Is responsible for promoting fiscal responsibility and appropriate use of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Assists the manager with identifying and developing grants in collaboration with team members and the St. Luke's Foundation.

Qualifications
  • Successful completion of an accredited nursing program
  • BSN
  • Minimum of five years experience as a Flight Nurse or Flight Paramedic
  • Successfully meets qualifications of RN, ED RN and Flight RN position descriptions.
  • Iowa Bureau of EMS Service director Workshop within 6 months of hire.
  • Possess current RN or PM licensure in the State of Iowa
  • Maintain current BLS, ACLS, PALS and NRP certification
  • Maintain current CFRN or FP-C certification.
  • Obtain and maintain currency of Certified Medical Transport Executive (CMTE) Certification
