Mar 30, 2026
Role: Power BI Developer

Location: Newark, NJ - Hybrid (2-3 days onsite per week)

Duration: 6 months (possible extension or right-to-hire)

Position Overview:

The team is seeking a Power BI Developer to build and optimize interactive dashboards and reports that support operational, HR, and financial reporting needs. This is a new capability for the group, so the contractor will serve as both a technical expert and mentor, helping existing team members gain Power BI proficiency through hands-on collaboration.

The role is highly technical - focused on data modeling, report development, and performance optimization - with opportunities to influence long-term reporting infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI dashboards and reports from raw and blended data sources.
  • Create and manage data models, queries, and calculations using DAX (Data Analysis Expressions).
  • Develop SQL-based data extractions and transformations from multiple data sources.
  • Integrate and validate data from various sources (SQL Server, Redshift, AWS Athena, manual datasets, etc.).
  • Partner with internal team members to share Power BI knowledge and build internal reporting capability.
  • Perform data cleansing, validation, and transformation for reporting accuracy.
  • Provide recommendations on visualization best practices and data storytelling.

Required Skills

  • Power BI Expertise: Minimum 5 years of hands-on experience building dashboards, reports, and DAX calculations.
  • SQL Proficiency: Ability to write complex queries, join and merge datasets, and build custom data views.
  • Data Modeling: Experience transforming raw data into structured, report-ready formats.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong ability to validate, cleanse, and troubleshoot complex data sets.
  • Visualization & Reporting: Knowledge of chart design, KPIs, and clear data representation.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with Redshift, AWS Athena, or other cloud data platforms.
  • Exposure to Azure Data Fabric or similar modern data frameworks.
  • Familiarity with Tableau and Excel (current team tools).
  • Prior experience in financial, HR, or operational reporting environments.

Soft Skills & Team Fit:

  • Strong communicator able to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
  • Collaborative and open to mentoring other team members.
  • Detail-oriented with a proactive, problem-solving mindset.

Key Takeaways

  • The team lacks current Power BI expertise - this role will establish that foundation.
  • Must be technically strong in both SQL and Power BI (including DAX).
  • Data will often be raw and unstructured, requiring someone comfortable with data wrangling.
  • Ideal candidate is experienced, detail-oriented, and collaborative, with at least 5 years of Power BI experience.
  • Potential long-term opportunity if contractor demonstrates value.
