POSITION SPECIFICS

We are searching for a Mechanical Engineering Technologist to join our Specialized Hardware and Rapid Prototyping Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University.In this role, you will support research and development engineers in project execution via design, fabrication, documentation, and test activities.

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

You will:

  • Collaborate with engineering staff and senior engineering technologists in developing, defining, and/or deriving requirements to support the design of engineering products

  • Perform design, development, fabrication, installation, and use of custom electrical, mechanical, and software subsystems

  • Utilize computer-aided design software to develop electrical, mechanical, and/or software products

  • Conduct tests, provide results, address issues, and recommend modifications related to electrical, mechanical, or software subsystems

Additional responsibilities for higher level position include:

  • Collaborate with project leadership on the conceptual design of complex electromechanical systems and subsystems

  • Guide and provide input for technical work activities performed by engineering support staff and/or less experienced engineering technologists

  • Research, evaluate, and recommend new engineering products and tooling to support the development of project systems

  • Prepare test plans, procedures, reports, and other forms of formal documentation

  • Develop specialized electrical, mechanical, and/or software tools to support testing of complex electromechanical systems

  • Collaborate with other research and enterprise offices at ARL to accomplish all phases of project development

  • Within a mechanical engineering discipline, maintain an up-to-date knowledge and work towards developing an advanced knowledge of design and analysis tools, test and measurement equipment, languages, and available products and services

Required skills/experience areas include:

  • Microsoft Office, including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Project, with the ability and willingness to learn new computer programs

  • Modeling software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Siemens NX, etc.)

  • Advanced manufacturing skills, 3D printing, CNC operation, CNC programming, Laser cutting

  • DFMEA/PFMEA

  • Operation of various shop and hand tools, precision measurements, and drawing interpretation

  • Mechanical assembly

  • Working in government shipyards, including an understanding of various codes and shop workflows

  • Maintenance and repair of various naval vessels

Preferred skills/experience areas include:

  • Familiarity with engineering drawings (both mechanical and electrical) using a computer-aided design (CAD) program

  • Prior purchasing and reconciliation experience for Department of Defense

  • Chemical management and Hazmat experience

  • Current eligibility for access to classified information at the Secret level or higher and may be subject to a government background investigation to upgrade clearance eligibility, if required

Your working location will be fully on-site between multiple locations in the State College area. This position will require periodic travel (approximately 20%) to remote locations in support of testing as part of a small team of researchers, engineers, and technologists.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

If filled as Engineering Technologist - Senior Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 6+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None If filled as Engineering Technologist - Advanced Professional, this position requires: Bachelor's Degree 3+ years of relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience accepted Required Certifications: None

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $68,200.00 - $115,100.00.**THE PROPOSED SALARY RANGE MAY BE IMPACTED BY GEOGRAPHIC DIFFERENTIAL**
