We are looking for a qualified Journeyman Substation Electrician who can safely perform maintenance, testing, and both high- and low-voltage switching on substation equipment while working effectively within a team. The ideal candidate is dependable, detail-oriented, and proactive in supporting crew readiness, adhering to safety procedures, and contributing to the development and evaluation of fellow electricians.

In this role, you will review job assignments and safety procedures, ensure all tools and equipment are prepared for each assignment, and help keep vehicles and materials properly stocked. Additionally, you will assist in training and mentoring other electricians while contributing to performance evaluations and overall team development.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of nine (9) years of experience in substation construction, maintenance, and testing OR six and a half (6.5) years of total progressive OUC substation electrician experience that includes three and a half (3.5) years of experience as an OUC Substation Electrician II (required)
  • Must possess a current and valid Florida Driver's License
  • Class A CDL (required)
  • Tanker endorsement (preferred)
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) clearance, or ability to acquire within six (6) months of hire
  • For demonstration of experience as an OUC Substation Electrician II: Completion of OUC Substation Electrician II sign-off book; and Maintenance of all safety certifications acquired at the OUC Substation Electrician II level; and Completion of required OUC Substation Electrician II level training or equivalent skills, training, or certifications (required)

Salary Range: Starting at $48.167 per hour (Estimated $100,187.36 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $56.914 per hour (Estimated $118,381.12 annually)

Job Purpose:

This is a qualified Substation Electrician I (Journeyman Substation Electrician) position. Performs maintenance and testing of all substation equipment. The Substation Electrician I works under the direction of the Lead Electrician on a multi-person crew maintaining substation equipment or other assigned duties as necessary.

Primary Functions:

  • Work with other Electricians to maintain or test all substation equipment under the leadership of the Lead Electrician.
  • Perform High Voltage (HV) & Low Voltage (LV) switching activities.
  • Review job assignments and safety procedures each morning with Lead Electrician and other Electricians as required.
  • Assist in preparing vehicle for next assignment with tools and equipment for their crew.
  • Help ensure all job-related equipment needs, crew needs, etc. are met (i.e. tools available, trucks are stocked, parts available, etc.).
  • Review training and requirements (field book) for Electricians II and III and help prepare underclass electricians for promotional assessments.
  • Assist Lead Electricians by providing evaluative information on underclass electricians for performance appraisals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Technical Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of, but not limited to, the following:
    • Advanced understanding of mechanics, hydraulics, pneumatics, and electrical maintenance methods within a substation
    • AC & DC electrical principles
    • Mechanical skills as related to electrical equipment
    • Schematics, manufacturer prints, and wiring drawings
    • Maintenance testing methods for substation equipment
    • Equipment to include trucks (e.g. Tractor trailers, tankers, bucket truck, F550 Crew, Line truck, Cranes), oil processing unit, electric testing equipment, substation equipment
    • Software and technologies to include Cascade, battery testing software, Doble testing software
  • Familiarity with the following:
    • Knowledge of mathematics to include graphic arithmetic, principles of mechanical concepts, reading comprehension (CAST Test competencies)
  • Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Achieve a minimum passing score of 80 on Substation Electrician I written and practical exam
  • Abilities to include:
    • Performing all aspects of substation electrician work without physical limitations
    • Comprehend instruction manuals and participate in electrical training
    • Analyze complex problems and discover the core of the problem
    • Demonstrating how to succeed and setting an example for others (mentoring/coaching)
    • Building relationships with co-workers and customers
    • Taking direction and demonstrating an eagerness to learn
    • Able to retain information
    • Wear and use various safety equipment (breathing apparatus, etc.)
    • Performing the role of crew leader when assigned, demonstrating how to succeed, and successfully coaching and mentoring lower classifications

Working Conditions:

This job involves exposure to extreme weather conditions and occasionally noxious fumes, insects, heights (upwards of 150 ft), confined spaces, and excessive noise. Participation in the supervisory call out for substation equipment and other emergencies is required. Such response shall be for scheduled and call out work in all types of weather conditions. May respond to after-normal-work-hour emergency calls to address operational problems where response time is critical to maintain system integrity.

Physical Requirements:

This job involves Very Frequent standing, walking, lifting up to 20 lbs, typing, speaking & hearing, and may involve very frequent detailed inspection, writing. This job may involve frequent sitting and lifting between 21 and 40 lbs. This job may involve occasional bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, and/or digging, reaching overhead, kneeling, crawling, and climbing (ladders, stairs, hills etc.). This job involves very frequent driving of a company vehicle.
