What to Expect

We are looking for a motivated, hands-on test engineer to join the Low Voltage Test Automation group, a team building robust, data-driven automation systems for Tesla's vehicle electronics. Our work spans the full product life cycle, from early engineering validation to high-volume production, and we are known across the company for tackling tough problems head-on and getting it done.

This team moves fast. Projects can go from idea to deployed test equipment in just weeks, supporting products on the cutting edge of Tesla's innovation. The pace is demanding, and priorities can shift quickly, but that's what makes the work exciting and impactful. As the team grows, we are looking for engineers who not only enjoy tinkering and building but also want to bring clarity and continuous improvement to how we operate.

The ideal candidate thrives on hands-on problem solving, takes ownership, and is eager to grow. You'll have the chance to design real validation systems and directly shape how the team scales. Superior work is noticed, responsibility is high, and the impact is immediate. This is your opportunity to be part of the "machine that builds the machine" at Tesla's engineering headquarters in Palo Alto, California.

What You'll Do
  • Develop comprehensive test strategies using in-house Python automation frameworks to drive continuous improvement of validation software across all vehicle platforms, while managing and optimizing Linux-based tester infrastructure through shell scripting and configuration management to ensure system reliability and reproducibility
  • Build and maintain data visualization and analysis pipelines via application development, PostgreSQL databases and Grafana dashboards to streamline data review and track performance metrics; providing effective communication of validation insights to cross-functional teams and enabling rapid data-driven decision making
  • Integrate firmware tools and make custom firmware modifications to control critical vehicle systems such as steering and braking, enabling advanced automation behaviors for effective testing and validation of safety-critical subsystems across all vehicle platforms
  • Analyze system behavior, troubleshoot system-level faults and triage results to identify, isolate and document issues, providing actionable insights to directly influence firmware controls, hardware design decisions, and overall vehicle behavior improvements
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives for test hardware platforms, equipment automation, software infrastructure and overall system efficiency to optimize testing throughput and resource utilization
  • Review vehicle schematics, wiring diagrams and electrical circuits to develop effective instrumentation specifications and work with engineering technicians to deploy test configurations
  • Collaborate daily with integration and design teams to improve test automation capabilities, communicate validation results and coordinate project schedules to meet critical release deadlines

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Software, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of demonstrated excellence as a Test Engineer or equivalent in an R&D setting for automotive, robotics or related industries
  • Strong programming proficiency in Python for test automation and data post-processing; with firmware development experience in C/C++ a plus
  • Experience working in Linux environments and proficiency in Bash scripting for automation and tooling development; familiarity with configuration management tools such as Ansible is a plus
  • Familiarity with SQL or time-series database storage and visualization tools such as PostreSQL, InfluxDB and Grafana is a plus
  • Demonstrated experience with debugging technical hardware problems and ability to quickly learn new engineering concepts
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to filter and distill relevant information for the right audience
