About this Position
The Aquatic Ecologist / Pond Manager is a part-time, on-call position responsible for supporting pond assessment, management, and ecological services. This role focuses on evaluating pond conditions, working directly with landowners, and implementing management plans to meet project goals. The position involves regular fieldwork, independent coordination, and hands-on work in outdoor environments, with an emphasis on safety and practical problem-solving.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Conduct baseline pond assessments to evaluate ecological conditions, limiting factors, and landowner goals
  • Communicate with landowners and property managers to coordinate and schedule pond management services
  • Develop and implement pond management plans, including permitting, stocking, vegetation control, aeration, and water level management
  • Perform fieldwork in variable and sometimes hazardous conditions, including physical labor such as lifting up to 50 pounds and removing nuisance vegetation
  • Coordinate with subcontractors and external partners to support pond management activities as needed
  • Support monitoring efforts and contribute to ecological data collection and reporting
  • Maintain a strong focus on personal and team safety in all field and project activities

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • 10+ years of experience supporting ecological or environmental projects, preferably in aquatic systems
    • Strong understanding of pond ecology, habitat management, and restoration practices
    • Experience supervising or coordinating field teams and managing field logistics
    • Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with landowners, agencies, and team members
    • Familiarity with permitting processes and regulatory considerations related to aquatic resources
    • Certifications or ability to obtain aquatic herbicide applicator certification
    • Proficiency with field navigation and equipment, including map/compass, Garmin InReach and eTrex, Trimble units, TruPulse rangefinder, and HILTI total station
    • Experience with software and data tools, including Microsoft Office Suite, ArcGIS (basic), and Fulcrum
    • Bachelor's degree in Geography, Environmental Studies, Anthropology, or a related field
    • Relevant field and safety training (e.g., First Aid/CPR, electrofishing safety, wilderness first aid, chainsaw or wildland fire training)
    • Ability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments and adapt to changing field conditions
