Idaho National Laboratory needs Fabrication Planners at multiple site facilities to drive innovation by optimizing workflows for groundbreaking nuclear energy and advanced technology projects, ensuring seamless coordination that keeps critical research and development on track to advance America's energy and national security missions. You'll develop work control instructions for personnel in area of assignment, ensure written instructions follow the laboratory work control process and applicable regulatory requirements, function as single point of contact for resolving work control issues from initiation to completion, and review drawings and assist engineering with designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs. Your responsibilities include working with subject matter experts to identify hazards and incorporate appropriate mitigations into work control documents, estimating labor hours and material costs to complete activities, exercising decision-making to involve appropriate crafts and experts in work planning to understand hazards, representing the organization on committees, reviewing completed work orders and resolving feedback, and mentoring other planners through on-the-job training while maintaining qualifications for assigned tasks.

Idaho National Laboratory is hiring a Fabrication Planner to work on our Fabrication Services team. Our team works a 4x10 schedule located at our site facilities in Idaho with every Friday off.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Plan and coordinate fabrication activities, including the manufacturing and assembly of components and systems.
  • Develop work control instructions for personnel in area of assignment.
  • Ensure written instructions follow the INL work control process, with relevant groups and ensure other applicable regulatory requirements are followed. Comply with applicable internal documents and regulations.
  • Function as a single point of contact for resolving work control issues from initiation to work completion.
  • Review drawings and assist engineering with designs to improve efficiency and reduce costs.
    Work with subject matter experts to identify hazards and appropriate mitigations and incorporate into work control documents.
  • Select applicable weld procedure specifications (based off materials and codes) and write weld data sheet work instructions for welders and inspectors.
  • Estimate labor hours and material costs to complete activities.
  • Exercise decision-making to involve appropriate crafts, customers, and other subject matter experts in work planning activities to fully understand the hazards involved in performing work.
  • Work with off-site vendors. Includes but not limited to selecting appropriate companies based off their capabilities, requesting quotations, and creating contract documents to direct their work.
  • Represent the organization on committees as requested by management.
  • Review completed work orders and resolve feedback. Interface with Facility Specialists and crafts to understand and apply recommended improvements. Revise work control documents as necessary.
  • Mentor other planners in areas of individual knowledge and experience through the "On the Job Training" process of qualifying operators on equipment.
  • Complete and maintain qualifications specified for assigned tasks

Required Qualifications:

  • Level 2: Bachelor's degree & 2 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree or 8 years of relevant experience in Lieu of a degree.
  • Level 3: Bachelor's degree & 5 years of relevant experience or an advanced degree and 2 years of relevant experience or 11 years of relevant experience in Lieu of a degree.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a Department of Energy "L" clearance, which requires US Citizenship.
  • Knowledge of fabrication processes.
  • Knowledge of machine shop equipment, including CNC capabilities.
  • An understanding of welding and related manufacturing processes.

Desired skills and experience:

  • Knowledge of applicable national manufacturing codes and standards.
  • An understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this classification, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, and work in an office and field/laboratory environment. The job requires hand/finger dexterity to keyboard or type, handle materials, manipulate tools, and reach with hands and arms. The job requires the operation of job-related equipment and driving a vehicle. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds. Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform the essential functions and interact with people is required. Job Information:

  • The pay range for this position is: Level 2 ($66,504 - $136,356) / Level 3 ($79,344 - $162,732). At Idaho National Laboratory compensation decisions are determined using factors such as education, relevant experience, and other credentials.

  • Multi-Level: This is a multi-level posting and you will be placed at the appropriate level dependent on depth and breadth of proven experience and skills.
  • TDP: This is a testing designated position; you will be required to submit to a pre-employment drug screen and periodic drug testing throughout the term of your employment.
