POSITION SUMMARY: Under the supervision of the Pharmacy Technician Manager, and according to department policies, procedures, and guidelines, the Technician III is responsible for the processing of medication orders, preparation of medications (including high risk, investigational and other medications), technician training, and other related duties for the purpose of providing high quality patient focused pharmacy services. Position: Certified Pharmacy Technician III Department: Inpatient Pharmacy Schedule: Full Time ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists the pharmacist in providing effective, appropriate, and safe pharmacy services: Maintains appropriate records. Facilitates the management of medication inventories. Maintains all work environments in a clean and orderly fashion. Maintains good telephone communication skills. Ensures all work is checked by a pharmacist. Attends and participates in all appropriate department programs and committees. Remains informed by reading all department communications which includes maintaining a working knowledge of pharmacy protocol, policies and updated procedures. Reports to the pharmacist or their supervisor the finding of malfunctioning equipment, and unsafe working conditions. Maintains proficiency to work in the following areas of the pharmacy: narcotic distribution, packing and re-packing, Pyxis Carousel System (dispensing, cycle counts, restocking, and returns), O.R. satellite functions, computer skills, general distribution skills, refilling and outdating medications in the automated dispensing cabinet, inventory maintenance and expiration checking. Responsible for timely, efficient and accurate distribution of drugs in accordance with department policies and procedures which includes picking up and delivery of patient specific medication. Performs all department required quality assurance responsibilities. Maintains own professional and specialized competency through continuing education. Ability to work independently. Conforms to hospital standards of conduct so that the best possible customer service and patient care may be provided: Maintains confidentiality at all times. Supports the service needs of the pharmacist relative to pharmacy services and maximized patient care outcomes. Performs and delivers reports on medication area inspections as assigned. Utilizes hospital's Values as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission. Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures. Reports to the pharmacist or his/her supervisor the finding of malfunctioning equipment. Must demonstrate proficiency to perform tasks of an IV technician: Including hazardous, investigational, adult and pediatric compounding. Provides orientation and training for pharmacists, technicians, and students as assigned. As assigned will provide training to Pharmacy Technicians I and II. Maintains proficiency in executing tasks for all shift assignments in the pharmacy, (eg. IV Room, Runner, OR tech, Temp Tech, and Carousel). May review medication renewal requests received by clinics for eligibility and prepare them for providers for approval, ensuring accurate documentation and protocol is followed. May support medication reconciliation on admission for general clinic visits. Obtains/clarifies patient home medication list by utilizing drug information sources, review of electronic medical record, contacting community pharmacies, interviewing patients and family to ensure proper identification of doses and drugs including prescription medications, over the counter drugs and herbal supplements. May be responsible for managing and growing an existing client base as well as developing new clients to meet monthly goals, annual growth and annual targets for the retail and specialty pharmacy population. Performs clinic monthly inspections, and/or health center quarterly inspections. Performs other duties and projects as needed such as lead QA projects, scheduling and others established by the department director as needed. Must adhere to all of BMC's RESPECT behavioral standards.
JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION:
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be registered as a Pharmacy Technician with the MA Board of Pharmacy. Must also have national certification (CPT) from Pharmacy Tech Certification Board (PTCB) or Exam of Certified Pharmacy Techs (exCPT)

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Requires excellent interpersonal skills, telephone communications skills and pharmaceutical calculation skills. Must be able to compound Pediatric IV, Chemo IV and must maintain competency in all areas of inpatient pharmacy. Technicians will be required to complete the following prior to working in the IV room: 1. IV Room Competency exam (minimum passing score of 90%) 2. USP 797 Competency exam (minimum passing score of 85%) 3. Hazardous Drug Competency exam (minimum 90%) 4. Pediatric Competency exam (90%)
Compensation Range: $26.92- $37.74
