Brief Summary of Job Duties: The Clinical Nurse Educator/Supervisor is required to comply with operational mandates from UCOP for system-wide compliance required of Student Health Centers. This position facilitates teamwork among the multidisciplinary staff and coordinates with the Nursing Director in regards to staffing, strategic planning and general administrative duties. Functions as advisor to unit and administration. Analyzes and resolves problems, interprets policies and demonstrates solid subject matter knowledge. Exercises judgment within defined procedures and policies to determine appropriate action. Supervises staff to assure accountability and stewardship of department resources in compliance with departmental goals and objectives. Additionally, the Clinical Nurse Educator/Supervisor position involves providing basic and complex health care for actual or potential health problems with interventions including but not limited to observation, assessment, therapeutic treatment, prevention, physical and mental care and comfort, screenings, education and research within the nursing scope of practice. The Clinical Nurse Educator/Supervisor is also required to comply with all regulations mandated by AAAHC (Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care) and the SHS governing body to maintain AAAHC Accreditation. Provides supervision and coaching to assigned staff. Manages employee work schedules for summer and furlough periods and approval of time off requests using Kronos. Implements disciplinary action as necessary. Complies with institutional, professional and regulatory agency standards, policies, procedures and regulations. Interprets policy, procedures, regulatory requirements, guidelines and standards and facilitates staff compliance as appropriate. Manages the Clinical Nurse Services, Immunization Clinic, and other nursing clinics to ensure that services meet daily patient demands. Serves on appointed and elected committees. Duties may include writing and presenting reports and acting as a liaison between committees and other community groups. Assists in developing policies, procedures, and protocols in collaboration with other health and administrative personnel to ensure quality patient care and meet accreditation standards. 30% Health Educator: General knowledge of the scope of practice, evidence-based practices, for all clinical staff, excluding MD, DO, NP, PA at SHS. Assists Nursing Director in coordinating yearly competencies for RNs, LVNs, and MAs. Provides teaching on the most up-to-date and current medical devices and equipment that SHS acquires. Provides educational leadership to the nursing and medical assistant staff to enhance specialized patient care within SHS. Establishes educational teaching modules for staff with regards to ongoing yearly and competencies. Collaborates with medical providers, patient care staff, and unit management in the planning, implementation, and delivery of educational curricula. Initiates skills development programs within the parameters of established care models; monitors trends and implements educational strategies to ensure compliance with quality standards and parameters. Interprets SHS policies and procedures as they relate to clinical staff and implements changes as needed. Develops patient care plans, incorporating evidenced-based research and national standards. Consults with and serves as a resource to ensure quality patient care. Educates technical and patient care staff in the use of new equipment, supplies, and instruments. Coordinates in-service training and workshops for appropriate staff. Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices. Will onboard and orient all new nursing staff members. 30% Clinical Nurse - Resource Will function as clinical nurse when staffing ratios are constrained (resource). Will backfill the nursing clinical needs of SHS. Obtains history and appropriate medical information in person, online or over the phone in order to triage a student, determining if, when and where a student should be seen. Provides pertinent patient education and/or makes an appropriate appointment utilizing the computerized appointment system. Escalates patient to be seen by a provider as indicated by patient history and protocols. Evaluates and treats per protocol within scope of practice and under standardized procedures. Consults with physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner or other clinical staff as appropriate. Escalates patient to be seen by a provider as indicated by patient history and protocols. Documents all encounters in the electronic medical records (EMR) system. Offers advice for home treatment of minor illnesses and injuries as well as providing information and guidelines regarding when to seek medical evaluation. Utilizes Student Health approved protocols and clinician consultation as needed. Provides patient education on topics including, but not limited to safe sex, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections. Refers and consults as appropriate using Student Health, campus and community resources. Completes medical records in a timely fashion in compliance with the Standardized Procedures and Protocols and Student Health Policies and Procedures. Reviews emergency room and after-hours Nurseline reports, and forwards pertinent reports to appropriate clinicians per protocol. Under standing orders, evaluates the need for both routine and travel vaccinations based on patient history and recommendations of the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Documents vaccination plan and administers vaccinations as appropriate. Follows guidelines for safe administration of vaccinations and management of vaccination reactions. Consults with a physician, physician assistant or nurse practitioner as needed. Serves as a resource to staff regarding clinical practices under the nursing scope of practice. Works with the physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners to provide current travel information and vaccinations based on recommendations from the CDC as well as other federal, state, local entities. Provides travel immunizations based on patient history, travel plans and recommendations of the CDC as well as others. Provides direct patient care via in person and telephonic visits per established nursing protocols. Utilizing secure email, notifies patients of results per protocol within scope of practice. Inserts IV's and administers IV medications as ordered by physician, nurse practitioner or physician assistant. Other duties as assigned within appropriate scope of practice. 10% Special Projects: Assists with, creates, and leads in the development and maintenance of multiple projects as directed by the Nursing Director within the clinical scope of practice for a registered nurse.
