Position Summary

The School of Architecture and Planning is seeking applications for Fab Lab Lead Assistants. Under the direct supervision and mentorship of the Fabrication Lab Manager, Fab Lab Lead Assistants will be involved in a wide range of projects with varying levels of complexity. Fab Lab Lead Assistants will support the Fab Lab Coordinator and Fab Lab Manager in oversight of the Fab Lab during all open hours. The responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to: guiding the work of student and faculty users; training faculty and students on the use of tools and machinery; cleaning and maintaining order in the Lab; ensuring that Fabrication Lab Assistants are following Lab protocols; assisting or leading special projects related to the Lab or Pearl Hall facility; and reporting problems to Fab Lab management.

Additional responsibilities will include the ability to move and lift objects up to 30lbs, operating and performing maintenance on analog tools and equipment in the woodshop and metal shop, as well as digital fabrication equipment such as laser cutters, CNC routers, CNC plasma cutters, 3D printers and associated software/programs. All applicants must have the capacity to maintain a safe and professional attitude. The successful candidate will be required to complete all required safety and equipment trainings.


Minimum Qualifications

Enrolled in a degree seeking program at UNM, Enrolled at least half-time (6 hours) at UNM for fall and spring semesters (Audit hours do not count), and if Work Study, you must meet Satisfactory Academic Progress.



Preferred Qualifications

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Currently enrolled in a degree granting program in the UNM School of Architecture and Planning (BAA, BAEPD, MArch, MS Arch, MCRP, MLA), or enrollment in graduate degree granting program in the UNM School of Engineering or UNM College of Fine Arts.

2. Minimum 1 year experience working in the SA+P Fabrication Lab or similar lab at another institution.

3. Demonstration of experience with analog fabrication processes including woodworking, metal working, hand tools, handheld power tools.

4. Experience using a variety of materials including wood, metal, and acrylic, and using mold making processes.

5. Ability to conceptualize and execute physically fabricated projects and apply relevant construction techniques.

6. Ability to problem solve and troubleshoot equipment, software, and design problems independently, and direct students and team members towards resources

7. Demonstration of knowledge and experience with digital fabrication equipment such as laser cutters, CNC routers, CNC plasma cutters and associated software (Rhino, AutoCAD, and Adobe suite); ability to troubleshoot these machines and processes, from start to finish.

8. Prior experience teaching and leading training workshops on various types of fabrication process. Comfortable teaching and training others on use of complex machinery, tools, and processes.
