The Senior Accountant is responsible for all accounting activities for the Ports America Chesapeake (PAC) business unit. This includes both routine and unusual transactions, preparation of journal entries, all monthly accruals, monthly financial statement preparation including balance sheet and income statement, account reconciliations, and other standard accounting/record keeping responsibilities.

Essential Duties:



  • Prepares supporting documents for and posts routine and recurring journal entries, accounting transactions and activities for 7 business day monthly GL closes.
  • Prepares monthly financial statements, comparing current periods to prior periods, budgets, and forecasts, with appropriate analysis to support external and internal audits.
  • Works with operating staff and other departments to make accruals and maintain recurring and reversing entries.
  • Accurately and efficiently use the company's accounting systems.
  • Works with multiple legal entities and is flexible in work assignments; able to work with multiple people under moderate deadline pressure.
  • Prepares accurate, timely, and well-documented monthly reconciliations for balance sheet accounts including timely resolution of differences.
  • Reviews fluctuations in accounts and write clear, concise explanations for variances.


  • Actively involved in supporting external and internal audits, financial reporting team, NJ group office, and PAC business unit requests.
  • Collaborates and works closely with the business unit finance team to understand the PAC business and provide excellent internal customer service, fulfilling business unit requests and addressing questions in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Looks for ways to improve and streamline the accounting process.


Working Conditions:



  • Occasional travel to port operations (possibly once or twice per year).
  • Hybrid office environment with flexibility; extended hours and reduced flexibility during reporting periods (typically month-end and year-end closes as well as year-end audits).
  • Physical activity typical of office environment.


Minimum Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in accounting required. Other majors will not be considered.
  • 2+ years accounting experience



    Preferred Requirements:



    • CPA and public accounting experience
    • Solid understanding of GAAP, journal entry mechanics, and internal controls.
    • Knowledge of financial statements, chart of accounts, journal entry preparation, accounting transactions and financial statement analysis.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Advanced Excel skills with ability to quickly learn Oracle ERP financial system and BlackLine reconciliations.
    • Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously under tight deadlines.
    • Ability to adapt to and thrive within Ports America culture and values, staying engaged with the accounting and PAC business unit teams.
