Your Role at Cabot:

Cabot Corporation is seeking a Principal Battery Scientist to join the Battery Materials team at the Billerica, MA technology Center location.

The Principal Battery Scientist is a senior technical leader and recognized expert in lithiumion battery science, with deep expertise in electrochemistry, battery materials, electrode design, and performance characterization. This role plays a critical part in advancing Cabot's battery materials development through applicationfocused research, customerrelevant development, and scientific leadership.

The Principal Battery Scientist leads the resolution of highly complex, high-impact technical challenges that are critical to the success of Cabot's battery materials portfolio. Operating with broad autonomy and influence, this individual partners closely with R&D, manufacturing, commercial, and external stakeholders to translate fundamental battery science into scalable technologies and differentiated customer solutions.

The role requires strong scientific rigor, crossfunctional collaboration, and external technical credibility, along with a demonstrated ability to mentor others and influence technology direction.

This position is wellsuited for an experienced battery scientist who is motivated by solving challenging technical problems, engaging with customers and external partners, and shaping the evolution of battery materials through insight, experimentation, and thought leadership.

This role is based at the Billerica, MA location, but is eligible to participate in the current HybridWorking Arrangement program (Monday/Friday remote and Tuesday-Thursday in office).

How You'll Make an Impact:

Technical Leadership and Innovation

  • Serve as a technical authority and internal consultant on lithium-ion and next-generation battery science.

  • Lead and execute advanced research and development programs focused on applying Cabot battery materials in lithiumion and nextgeneration battery systems.

  • Address complex, highimpact technical challenges related to energy density, power capability, cycle life, fast charging, safety, and reliability.

  • Develop and apply robust experimental and analytical methods to evaluate material-electrode-cell interactions and performance tradeoffs.

  • Establish and advance scientifically rigorous methodologies for battery evaluation, failure analysis, degradation modeling, and performance prediction.

  • Act as a goto technical resource for multidisciplinary project teams. Provides technical consultation and advice across multiple product lines or product development projects.

Technology Development and Strategy Contribution

  • Contribute meaningfully to Cabot's battery technology roadmap, bringing applicationdriven insights and external perspective.

  • Identify emerging battery trends, customer needs, and technology gaps relevant to Cabot's battery materials.

  • Support portfolio and program decisions by clearly articulating technical opportunities, risks, and performance implications.

  • Partner with R&D leadership to shape medium and longterm research priorities.

Customer and Application Support

  • Provide technical leadership in customerfacing engagements, including joint development programs, application troubleshooting, and performance benchmarking.

  • Translate customer requirements into clear technical objectives and development strategies.

  • Support internal commercial and technical service teams with deep application knowledge and datadriven recommendations.

  • Represent Cabot's battery materials capabilities with technical credibility in customer and partner interactions.

Mentorship and Knowledge Development

  • Mentor scientists and engineers, strengthening technical capability and scientific thinking within the organization.

  • Provide guidance on experimental design, data interpretation, and effective technical communication.

  • Contribute to internal knowledge sharing through reviews, technical forums, and bestpractice development.

  • Serve as a role model for highimpact individual contribution and collaborative leadership.

External Engagement and Scientific Visibility

  • Maintain active engagement with the external battery research community, including conferences, workshops, and technical networks.

  • Publish and present technical work, as appropriate, to enhance Cabot's scientific visibility and credibility.

  • Build productive relationships with universities, research institutes, and external collaborators aligned with battery applications.

Intellectual Property, Safety, and Professional Standards

  • Generate and support intellectual property related to battery materials and their applications.

  • Conduct all work with strong emphasis on laboratory safety, data integrity, and responsible research practices.

  • Ensure compliance with Cabot's EHS, quality, and IP policies.

  • Promote a culture of scientific rigor, ethical conduct, and continuous improvement.

What You'll Bring to Cabot:

  • Ph.D. in Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field with 8+ years of experience in electrochemical energy storage research OR Master's degree with 12+ years of experience in relevant research.

  • Demonstrated technical contributions to battery applications through publications, patents, or customerrelevant development work.

  • Experience working at the interface of materials innovation and battery performance strongly preferred.

  • Experience leveraging data science, machine learning, and/or artificial intelligence methods to accelerate battery research, materials optimization, performance modeling, or experimental insight generation is highly desirable.

Technical Depth and Scientific Judgment

  • Demonstrated depth of expertise in lithiumion battery science, including electrochemistry, battery materials, electrode behavior, performance tradeoffs, degradation mechanisms, and safety considerations.

  • Strong scientific judgment in applying theory, experimentation, and data analysis to complex battery application challenges.

  • Ability to critically evaluate experimental results, assumptions, and limitations, and to draw technically sound conclusions.

  • Recognized capability to connect materiallevel properties to electrode and celllevel performance outcomes.

  • Proven ability to reason through complex, multivariable technical problems where solutions are not well defined.

  • Comfort working in technically ambiguous spaces, forming hypotheses, and refining approaches based on evidence.

How We'll Support Your Success:

  • The pay range for this role is from $161,500 to $234,200. The actual compensation offered to the successful candidate will depend on the candidate's skill, qualifications, experience and location. In addition, all positions are eligible for health benefits on the first day of employment, 401K savings plans, vision, dental and annual bonus based on company performance.
