About the Role

The Accounting Manager - Anchorage position is responsible for the budgets and monthly expense variance analysis for the Anchorage terminal and Alaska Railbelt operations. This person directly manages the union accounting clerical staff at the Anchorage terminal and provides direct support to the management team to determine cost allocations, budget planning, and capital expense review. Heavy emphasis on managing people and leading a diverse accounting team. Responsible for the effective and efficient use of financial systems for Alaska.

What you'll do:

  • Reviews and approves expenditures, coding, accounting, and associated functions.
  • Primary backup to the Accounting Manager of Dutch Harbor and Kodiak.
  • Directs and monitors the activities of the office clerical staff including managing the vacation calendar, office schedule, and overtime bids.
  • Participates in office clerical hiring and training to ensure adequate office coverage.
  • Manages clerical staff within the guidelines of the union contract.
  • Participates in contract negotiations by providing administrative and financial analysis.
  • Develops, implements, and maintains the corporate and division accounting standards and procedures.
  • Reviews and approves accounts payable invoices and payroll for the Anchorage location.
  • Develops operating and overhead budgets for the Anchorage terminal and the Alaska Railbelt operations.
  • Provides financial review and analysis for Anchorage management and collaborates with other Matson locations.
  • Takes lead on all union pension audits for Anchorage.
  • Able to understand operational cost drivers.
  • Protects confidential information and complies with SOX.
  • Other projects or duties as assigned.

You have these skills:

  • Analysis - Ability to effectively analyze and present cost of operations and the cost drivers and revenue where applicable.
  • Effective Communications - Communicates in a variety of settings, including one-on-one, small and large groups, or among a diverse group and position levels.

And these qualifications:

  • College degree in accounting or management field or 5 years' equivalent experience with knowledge of cost accounting and budgeting.
  • 3-5 years' previous management experience leading and directing a team
  • Current on the latest developments in the technical and functional field of accounting.
  • Excellent computer proficiency in Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, and Outlook).
  • Take initiative and makes decisions.
  • Share knowledge, ideas, and information within the organization and has the ability to positively influence others.
  • Effective written and communication skills with the ability to lead meetings and present information.
  • Organized, set priorities, design processes, meet deadlines, and set realistic goals.
  • Guide and inspire others to accomplish goals and set high standards of performance.
  • Develop relationships and treat people as valued team members.
  • Manage multiple tasks and priorities.

Extra credit if you have:

  • Prior experience working with a union workforce and an understanding of collective bargaining agreements is a plus.
  • Prior experience working with an operations team is a plus.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is primarily performed in an office environment requiring some stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
  • Able to lift up to 20 lbs.
  • May be required to work extended hours depending on operational needs.
  • Some travel required.
