We are looking for a highly motivated, independent but team-oriented Clinical Laboratory Technologist I to join our team. Our clinical laboratory incorporates many processes, applications, and specialized techniques along with the use of various types of instrumentation to perform cutting-edge tests in the areas of genetics and oncology; all of which aid in patient care. This position will allow the Clinical Laboratory Technologist to perform advanced, molecular-based skillsets, interpret complex data, and effectively troubleshoot while adhering to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA) guidelines.

Key Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):



  • Perform a variety of clinical laboratory procedures, including nucleic acid extraction and quantification, PCR, Sanger sequencing, and next-generation sequencing, pursuant to established protocols;
  • Perform both manual and automated techniques to accomplish high-volume sample processing;
  • Participate in equipment maintenance, QC/QA, and proficiency testing procedures;
  • Provide detailed, accurate, and legible documentation associated with test results, maintenance records, and quality control;
  • Troubleshoot assays as needed, with assistance from laboratory management;
  • Assist with the validation of new assays;
  • Complete other laboratory tasks as assigned.

Requirements & Qualifications



  • Bachelor of Science degree in biology preferred; other related majors will also be considered.
  • NYS Clinical Laboratory Technologist License (full or restricted to Molecular Diagnosis) required.
  • At least one year of experience in a clinical genetics laboratory strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with next-generation sequencing on Illumina and PacBio platforms highly preferred.
  • Detail-oriented and able to exercise independent judgment.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must be available to work 5 days per week, including Saturdays as needed. However, we do not anticipate that Saturday work will be required every week.

Work Flexibility

NYGC has established a flexible work policy to give employees and other staff more ability to balance their work, personal commitments, and commuting challenges. We require a candidate who can work onsite full-time, but we are open to a flexible work arrangement for this position, with supervisory approval.

Salary & Benefits

The pay range for this position is $72,500 - $83,000 per year; the base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.

About the New York Genome Center

The New York Genome Center (NYGC) is an independent, nonprofit, academic research organization dedicated to advancing genomic research. NYGC scientists and staff are furthering new approaches to diagnosing and treating neurological diseases and cancer through their unique capabilities in whole genome sequencing, RNA sequencing, state-of-the-art analytics, and the development of genomic tools. NYGC concentrates specifically on disease-based research in the following areas: neuropsychiatric disease (autism, schizophrenia, bipolar); neurodegenerative disease (ALS, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's), and cancer.

Located in Lower Manhattan, the New York Genome Center was founded by and remains closely affiliated with the leading academic medical centers and research universities in the New York region, engaging in research projects with and for these institutions.
