THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled PennDOT CDL Operator to join the Paint Crew based at the Buckstown Shed in Somerset County. This district role plays an important part in line painting, thermoplastic application, and other durable pavement marking operations, requiring the safe and effective use of specialized equipment. The position also includes operating maintenance equipment assigned to this operator level and performing a variety of manual labor duties to support winter maintenance operations. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this role, you will help ensure that all district line-painting equipment is fully prepared, properly calibrated, and ready for daily operations. You will support painting activities by monitoring equipment performance, maintaining accurate line placement, and reacting quickly to changing conditions. In addition, you may be trained and certified to operate a variety of heavy equipment used in both construction and maintenance operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Prepare and inspect all line-painting equipment to ensure it is fully stocked, calibrated, fueled, and operational for daily use.
  • Monitor equipment during painting operations to maintain proper paint application, bead distribution, line width, color, and placement.
  • React quickly to operational changes to prevent misalignment or improper marking.
  • Assist with refilling materials, checking communication equipment, and supporting on-site operational needs.
  • Train and become certified to operate a range of heavy equipment, including snow plows, backhoes, tractor mowers, graders, rollers, loaders, sweepers, and other machinery used in construction and maintenance work.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch. Work hours subject to change based on seasonal requirements and operational needs.
  • The crew for this position will follow a seasonal reporting schedule:
    • April through December:Report to the District 9 Paint Crew at the Buckstown Shed in Somerset County.
    • December through March:Report to a District 9 winter stockpile for winter maintenance duties.
      • Employees who reside within a District 9 county may be assigned to a winter stockpile in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Fulton, Huntingdon, or Somerset County.
      • Employees who live outside District 9 will be assigned to report to a Cambria or Somerset County winter stockpile.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the Transportation Equipment Operator Trainee Program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Graduation from a Commercial Driver's License Training School; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • Must possess an active Pennsylvania Class A or B Commercial Driver's License or equivalent with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed. This position requires that E restriction is removed.
  • Must possess an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
  • Must obtain an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders, and two additional pieces of construction equipment, within the probationary period.
  • This position requires employees to obtain and maintain CDL endorsements and certifications necessary to operate specific pieces of equipment.
  • This position requires employees to demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
  • All employees must obtain an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N) during the probationary period and continuously maintain it while employed in this job.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be willing to commute to Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
  • You must be willing and able to work unannounced overtime.
  • You must be willing and able to repair industrial type equipment (pumps, paint and bead guns, other painting related equipment).
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
