THE POSITION

Are you ready to launch an exciting career in geology? District 10 is seeking motivated individuals who are committed to protecting the health and safety of Pennsylvania's citizens and environment. If you are eager to grow your Commonwealth career and develop your expertise as a Geoscience Trainee, we encourage you to apply and join our team.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The Geoscience Trainee plays a key role in the District's Geotechnical and Geology Unit. In this position, you will receive both formal instruction and hands-on training to build the skills needed to perform geotechnical and geologic work. Your assignments will introduce you to the practical application of geotechnical and geological principles, beginning with foundational tasks and progressing to more complex responsibilities as your technical proficiency grows. All work is reviewed by a professional supervisor to ensure accuracy, quality, and adherence to established standards while supporting your professional development.

As a trainee, you will work closely with the District Geotechnical Engineer and Assistant Geotechnical Engineer across all unit functions. Your duties will include providing geotechnical design recommendations, reviewing consultant reports, preparing technical reports, and conducting geologic and soils site reconnaissance. You will also assist in managing the mining variance and monitoring program, coordinating geotechnical hazard repair designs, and supporting County Maintenance Managers by recommending, estimating, and drafting typical sections for foundation, slope stability, drainage, and mine-related issues.

Additional responsibilities include monitoring and interpreting data from instruments installed in slopes and beneath roadways, coordinating treatments for longwall-mined areas, and assisting with GP-3 permit applications for slope repairs. You will prepare detailed cross-sections using boring log information, recommend appropriate slope treatments, and inspect and approve bearing strata for foundations and embankments.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

Additional details may be provided during the interview.
