Position Overview:
Provides direct and indirect patient care under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, consistent with established guidelines of practice, Mercy Health System goals, the Philosophy of the Sisters of Mercy, the Code of Professional and Business Ethics, and the Employee Code of Conduct.

This role supports the Nursing Unit by performing patient care assistance, clerical, billing, and receptionist duties, serving as a liaison between departments, and ensuring accurate documentation and smooth unit operations.

Scheduled Hours:
Part-time: 0.6 FTE (approximately 24 hours per week)
Shifts: 6:00 AM - 6:30 PM (12-hour shifts)
Weekend Requirement: 0.3 weekend commitment within the 0.6 FTE

Equivalent to two weekend shifts per two-week pay period

Holiday rotation required Position Details:
Key Responsibilities Patient Care & Unit Support
  • Assist with general nursing activities as delegated
  • Interact routinely with patients, families, nurses, physicians, and ancillary staff
  • Prepare patient care areas for admission and discharge
  • Support patient comfort and care while maintaining cost awareness
Instrument & Equipment Responsibilities
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare reusable equipment, instruments, and supplies per hospital policy
  • Presoak instruments using enzymatic solutions; disassemble components as required
  • Assemble, label, and prepare instruments and supplies for sterilization
  • Inspect equipment for damage and coordinate repairs with contracted vendors
  • Coordinate distribution, transport, and handling of clean and soiled items
Environment of Care
  • Maintain the cleanliness and organization of:
    • Nurse's station, NICU, support areas, and patient rooms
  • Restock supplies, chart forms, and paper products
  • Perform daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning per protocol
  • Monitor and complete required quality control checks
  • Pick up and deliver supplies and equipment throughout the hospital
Clerical & Administrative Duties
  • Act as receptionist for the nursing unit; greet families and visitors professionally
  • Answer and triage phone calls promptly
  • Admit, transfer, and discharge patients using hospital computer systems
  • Assemble charts, admission packets, education packets, and NICU/NBN materials
  • Log and maintain medical records (prenatal records, labs, consents, referrals)
  • Run charges and ensure compliance with bar code scanning
  • Maintain census records and HUGS system documentation
  • Coordinate communication between nursing staff, physicians, and other departments
Qualifications Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills required
Licensure / Certification
  • No licensure required
  • Current American Heart Association BLS/Healthcare Provider certification
    • OR the ability to complete certification within the probationary period
Experience
  • Previous nurse assistant or patient-contact experience preferred
  • Familiarity with medical terminology and documentation processes strongly desired

  • May be required to work varied days or shifts based on patient care needs

  • May transport equipment and supplies throughout the hospital

  • Radiant warmers, isolettes, cribs
  • Ventilators, oxyhoods, pulse oximetry
  • Cardio-respiratory monitors, IV pumps, phototherapy equipment
  • Computers and other NICU/NBN-specific equipment
