Job Summary

The Structured Cabling Technician I is an entry-level role responsible for supporting the installation, routing, labeling, and basic termination of structured cabling systems within data center and commercial environments. This position assists with installing copper and fiber cabling, building cable pathways, and organizing network infrastructure while following project specifications, safety standards, and established procedures. The Technician I works under the supervision of senior technicians and team leads, gaining hands-on experience while developing the technical skills required to progress within the low-voltage and telecommunications industry.

Job Responsibilities




  • Assist with installing and routing copper and fiber cabling within data center and commercial environments



  • Pull, route, and organize CAT5e, CAT6, and fiber optic cabling according to project specifications and industry standards



  • Install cable pathways including ladder racks, basket trays, J-hooks, and cable supports



  • Dress and organize cables within server racks, cabinets, patch panels, and cable management systems



  • Terminate copper cabling at jacks, patch panels, keystones, and RJ-45 connectors under supervision



  • Assist with fiber cabling installations and support basic fiber termination tasks



  • Label cables, racks, patch panels, and pathways according to project standards



  • Support the installation of wireless access points and other low-voltage network devices



  • Read and follow blueprints, technical diagrams, and written installation instructions



  • Assist with cable testing and troubleshooting activities under the guidance of senior technicians



  • Maintain clean, organized, and secure work areas within data center environments



  • Follow all jobsite safety requirements, security protocols, and PPE guidelines



  • Collaborate with Technician II and Lead Technicians to complete project tasks on schedule




Job Requirements




  • High school diploma or GED required



  • 0-2 years of experience in structured cabling, low-voltage installation, construction, or related technical work



  • Basic understanding of copper cabling systems including CAT5e and CAT6



  • Ability to pull, route, and handle copper or fiber cabling in commercial environments



  • Familiarity with hand tools and basic installation equipment



  • Ability to read and follow blueprints, diagrams, and technical instructions



  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship



  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and follow direction from senior technicians



  • Comfortable working in data centers, server rooms, and commercial construction environments



  • Willingness to learn fiber optic installation, cable testing, and advanced cabling techniques



  • OSHA 10 certification preferred




Education




  • High school diploma or GED required




Work Experience




  • 0-2 years of experience supporting structured cabling, low-voltage installations, or construction-related work



  • Experience working in data centers or large-scale commercial projects preferred

Additional Job Details (Commute, Attendance, etc.)




  • Schedule: Monday through Friday with a 6:00 AM or 7:00 AM start time



  • Work environment: Data center and large-scale commercial project sites



  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and move up to 75 pounds



  • Ability to work on ladders, scissor lifts, and in confined spaces



  • Requires prolonged standing, walking, and physical labor



  • Basic hand tools required, including screwdriver (multi-bit), tape measure, snips, needle-nose pliers, channel locks, cable stripper, punchdown tool, flashlight, gloves, and tool pouch



  • Steel toe or composite toe work boots required



  • Labeling tools and additional power tools are a plus



  • May require travel to various job sites and occasional overtime based on project schedules
