The Position Job TitleAccounting Manager Job Description

SUMMARY

This role is responsible for overseeing the bank reconciliation and fixed asset team, ensuring accurate reconciliation of all general ledger and bank accounts, and managing the accounting for fixed assets and their depreciation, as well as lease accounting.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS)

  • Manage all bank reconciliation and fixed asset personnel on an administrative level including recruiting, hiring, training, scheduling, coaching and discipline.
  • Oversee daily reconciliation activities across various general ledger accounts, internal DDA accounts, correspondent bank accounts, and financial systems.
  • Review reconciliations for accuracy, identifying and investigating discrepancies or errors.
  • Review and approve daily accounting entries to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper coding before posting to the general ledger.
  • Develop and improve reconciliation and fixed asset processes and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
  • Prepare reports on reconciliation status, discrepancies, and resolution of all outstanding items for management.
  • Manage reconciliation documentation and audit trail to support financial audits and reviews.
  • Manage lease accounting processes in accordance with ASC 842 Lease Accounting. This includes identifying lease agreements, calculating right-of-use assets and lease liabilities, ensuring proper classification of leases, and maintaining accurate lease records in the lease system.
  • Manage real and personal property tax processes by accruing, retrieving and reviewing all tax statements, ensuring timely payments, and maintaining accurate records of tax liabilities and payments.
  • Assist in the month-end closing process by performing detailed variance analysis on specific accounts, identifying discrepancies, and providing explanations to support accurate financial reporting.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, FDICIA controls and regulatory requirements.
  • Implement automation tools via AI, excel or other applicable technology to streamline reconciliation processes where applicable.
  • Collaborate with other departments such as deposit operations, loan operations, community banks, audit, and compliance to resolve issues.
  • Work with leadership to define departmental/staff goals and develop strategic direction for the department
  • Provide exceptional customer service, collaboration, and partnership with community bank presidents, corporate department leaders, and other bank staff

ADDITIONAL DUTIES AND RESONSIBILITIES

  • Perform other duties as requested by management.
  • Implement methods to improve department.
  • Attend regular meetings with other members of the Accounting and Finance departments.
  • Willingness to learn and grow through one-on-one training, classroom training and other opportunities provided by the bank.
  • participate in various teambuilding activities.
  • Adherence to all First United Policies and Procedures.
  • Dress professionally.
  • Complete all required compliance exams on a yearly basis.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required.
  • Five to ten years of experience in bank accounting or bank operations required.
  • 2 years of management, supervisor, or mentor experience required.

Technical/Functional Competencies

  • Excellent organization skills and self-starter
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with accounting software and reconciliation tools.
  • Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with Jack Henry or similar AS400 software a plus.
  • Experience with BlackLine or similar reconciliation system a plus.
  • Experience with Prologue or similar GL system a plus.
