The Department of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) invites applications for an Associate Research Scientist to join the research group of Dr. Noemie Elhadad. The successful candidate will contribute to cutting-edge research at the intersection of data security, patient privacy, and federated machine learning in healthcare and collaborate with stakeholders within CUIMC and researchers within and outside of the University.

This position offers an exciting opportunity to work on advancing privacy-preserving AI systems for real-world clinical and translational applications.

Responsibilities

The Associate Research Scientist will:



  • Lead and contribute to research on data security and privacy in federated machine learning systems applied to healthcare data
  • Develop novel methods for privacy-preserving analysis of distributed clinical and biomedical datasets
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across biomedical informatics, computer science, governance, and ethics
  • Mentor graduate students and contribute to their research development
  • Participate in grant writing, publication, and disseminiation of research findings



Candidates must have:



  • A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a closely related field, with a focus on security and privacy
  • Familiarity with medical data, including electronic health records and translational bioinformatics datasets
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct independent research and publish in relevant venues


Preferred qualifications include:



  • Experience working with healthcare data
  • Knowledge of regulatory and ethical considerations in patient data use
  • Prior experience mentoring students or junior researchers
