Job Summary

The Engineering Apprentice is intended as a growth position for Darling Engineering functions. Educated and/or knowledgeable of mechanical and/or electrical concepts, project management, instrumentation, or continuous improvement, albeit "green" with respect to work experience. Apprentice will work closely with senior engineers to develop engineering strategies on the "enterprise" level. He/She will focus on gaining knowledge of the rendering process and equipment, capital expenditure (CapEx) evolution, control systems, and reliability practices.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Assist Engineers in the deployment and administration of Darling's CapEx Process. Emphasis on:
    • Design and manufacturing of rendering processes and equipment.
      • Process flow and instrumentation diagrams, and equipment layouts
      • Operational support functions; environmental, safety, and quality.
      • Pricing and/or cost estimates
      • Capital Expenditure Request (CER) administration
    • Project management functions
      • Scope of Work (SOW) development
      • Contractor management and operations interaction
    • Control systems
      • Automation and networking hierarchy
      • PLC and HMI vernacular and hardware
      • Startup and commissioning
    • Plant Reliability
      • CMMS (Maintenance Connection) proficiency
      • Predictive maintenance initiatives of Oil Analysis, Vibration Analysis, and Infrared Surveys.
      • Support of Lean Manufacturing initiatives such as Six Sigma, Kaizen, and 5S.
  • Examine and understand engineering functions with established departmental processes developed by QA, Environmental, Safety, Accounting, HR, and IT.
  • Offer support to plant operations for sudden upsets, urgent conditions, or breakdowns.
  • Review reports and analyze data under guidance of Engineers.
  • Tracks an analyze key engineering metrics such as estimate accuracy, scope adherence, cost overrun, project schedule compliance, and closure compliance.

At the end of internship, must provide a 2-3 page essay summarizing work experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Pursuit of Bachelors Degree in engineering or associate degree with technical engineering emphasis.
  • Able to speak, read, and write English.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong organizational and communication skills and problem solving.
  • Ability to multitask, set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrates time management skills.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office Programs.
  • Ability to work well in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with mobile devices, internet research, and social media
