WHAT YOU DO AT AMD CHANGES EVERYTHING

At AMD, our mission is to build great products that accelerate next-generation computing experiences-from AI and data centers, to PCs, gaming and embedded systems. Grounded in a culture of innovation and collaboration, we believe real progress comes from bold ideas, human ingenuity and a shared passion to create something extraordinary. When you join AMD, you'll discover the real differentiator is our culture. We push the limits of innovation to solve the world's most important challenges-striving for execution excellence, while being direct, humble, collaborative, and inclusive of diverse perspectives. Join us as we shape the future of AI and beyond. Together, we advance your career.

THE ROLE:

Bring AMD's leading-edge SoCs to life in a virtual environment! Develop Fast Platform Models that simulate the software-visible behavior of AMD's next-generation CPUs, MI-series data-center GPUs, Data Fabric and chiplet interconnect, and high-speed I/O technologies including USB4, PCIe, IOMMU, RISC-V microcontrollers, and more. Enable pre-silicon development of firmware, operating systems, drivers, and application software by allowing teams to boot, run, and debug software months before silicon is available.

This is an AI-native engineering role where success comes from combining strong architectural judgment with the effective use of frontier AI coding models and agentic development tools. You will leverage AI to accelerate the design, implementation, verification, and debugging complex virtual platform models while maintaining a high bar for correctness, quality, and performance. Your models will be used by internal engineering teams and external customers running real-world workloads.

The Virtual Software Modeling Engineer will have broad scope and work with multiple teams to gather SoC and IP component specifications, plan development to meet milestones, build models, and support internal and external stakeholders. You will be a team player on a highly capable and supportive team, working on projects critical to AMD's success. This is a highly visible and impactful role with excellent growth opportunities.

THE PERSON:

You think of systems and enjoy translating complex hardware specifications into high-quality software models. You are adept at problem-solving and thrive on developing efficient solutions to challenging technical problems. You hold a high standard for correctness, quickly learn new concepts and technologies, and continuously seek ways to improve existing solutions.

You leverage AI coding tools as a core part of your engineering workflow-or are eager to become highly proficient with them. You are a collaborative teammate who contributes positively to the team and helps elevate the work of those around you.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Architect and develop high-performance C++ functional models of AMD SoCs, IP blocks, and platforms.
  • Utilize AI coding tools and agentic development workflows to accelerate model implementation, verification, debugging, and optimization.
  • Work closely with architecture teams to understand specifications and accurately model new hardware designs.
  • Improve the functionality, stability, scalability, and performance of existing models.
  • Develop tests and verification methodologies to ensure model correctness and software-visible accuracy.
  • Work with internal and external customers to debug workloads and resolve issues discovered while running on virtual platforms.
  • Develop innovative enhancements to the simulation infrastructure, debugging capabilities, and AI-enabled modeling workflows.
  • Highly leverage AI tools for maximum efficiency in all job functions.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Strong experience developing high-performance systems and application software in C/C++ for Linux and/or Windows environments.
  • Deep understanding of hardware/software interfaces, including registers, memory maps, interrupts, and software-visible hardware behavior.
  • Multi-threaded programming and synchronization primitives (e.g., mutexes, atomics, condition variables, lock-free data structures), including common pitfalls such as deadlocks, livelocks, priority inversion, and false sharing.
  • Hardware system architecture and subsystem interface protocols.
  • Experience with functional modeling, architecture simulation, virtual platforms, or hypervisor development.
  • Experience with SystemC/TLM-2.0, QEMU, SIMICS, GEM5, Virtualizer, VirtualBox, or similar technologies.
  • Experience with x86, ARM, or GPU architecture, firmware, drivers, or application development.
  • Linux and/or Windows kernel debugging experience.
  • Experience using AI-assisted software development tools to improve productivity, code quality, and engineering efficiency.
  • Background in pre-silicon verification, emulation, firmware/BIOS bring-up, embedded systems, QEMU/hypervisor development, GPU software, or driver development is highly valued.

ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS:

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.
