The Department of American Indian Studies at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD) seeks to add to its pool of temporary instructors and/or assistant professors to teach in the graduate programs on a part-time basis for fall semester 2026. Term contract(s) only. Appointments will include online classes with periodic weekend synchronous classes (virtual). Note: Being a member of the pool does not ensure a contract will be offered; course offerings, and therefore teaching appointments, vary with demand and available funding.

Candidates are encouraged to apply whose specialization includes tribal administration and governance. Courses will be filled on an as needed basis. Possible courses include, but are not limited, to MTAG 5430: Tribal Finance Accounting and Budgets.

Qualifications

Adjunct Instructor/Instructor (Job Code 9404A)
Required Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of seven years professional experience in working with American Indian nations OR BA/BS degree in a related field coupled with a minimum of fifteen years professional experience in working with American Indian nations.
  • Knowledge and experience working with American Indian nations.
  • Proficiency, or the willingness to become proficient, in utilizing instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS).
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

Adjunct Asst Prof/ Asst Prof (Job Code 9403A)
Preferred Preparation and Experience:

  • Doctorate degree OR All But Dissertation (ABD) status in a related field OR comparable terminal degree (i.e. JD)
  • Two or more years of relevant college-level teaching experience or comparable professional experience in a relevant field.
  • Demonstrated experience and effectiveness in teaching, including use of instructional technologies (i.e., CANVAS)
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Established record of scholarship (i.e., publications)
About the Department

American Indian Studies is an academic department continuing a robust five-decade legacy in which active scholars serve to educate students, colleagues, and the public about tribal sovereignty, indigenous cultures, and the historical and contemporary experiences of Native peoples and nations. The department has five programs: two majors (American Indian Studies and Tribal Administration and Governance), a minor (American Indian Studies) a Master of Tribal Administration and Governance and a Master of Tribal Resource and Environmental Stewardship and four graduate certificates. We strive to create strong relationships with Tribes within our geographic area and we work to fulfill our responsibility to all Native nations through consultation, partnerships, and research. Pay and Benefits

Pay Range: Adjunct Assistant Professor 9403A - $59,433.50 - $79,126.00 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience or
Adjunct Instructor 9404A - $46,225.13 - $61,634.00 annually; depending on education/qualifications/experience
