Overview

The Associate Vice President (AVP) for Research and Innovation drives the strategic growth of Clarkson's research, technology commercialization, and innovation efforts, fostering partnerships that translate research into tangible societal and economic impact. The AVP plays a key role in fostering an innovative, interdisciplinary, and entrepreneurial research environment that supports faculty, students, and staff.

The AVP leads initiatives that enhance the University's capacity for research excellence, technology transfer, industry and government partnerships, as well as innovation ecosystem development. The role involves close collaboration with academic deans, center directors, and external stakeholders to grow research impact and align institutional research strengths with regional and national priorities.

Compensation for this role will consist of two months of summer salary, calculated according to the selected candidate's current rate of pay.



Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership and Administration
* Expand, implement, and advance Clarkson's research roadmap, aligned with institutional goals and strengths.
* Drive growth in sponsored research funding, emphasizing interdisciplinary and translational opportunities.
* Identify and promote emerging areas of research strength and funding potential. Champion a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship across academic units.

Innovation & Technology Transfer
* Promote a culture of innovation and technology commercialization by facilitating technology transfer, commercialization activities, and startup programs in collaboration with faculty, students, industry partners, and other stakeholders.
* Strategize university decisions and activities related to invention disclosure, intellectual property protection, patenting, licensing, and startup formation.
* Develop and implement systems to track and report metrics related to intellectual property, licensing revenue, startup activity, and technology-based partnerships.
* Develop programs that support student, faculty, and staff ventures, including mentorship, seed funding, and access to innovation networks.

Partnerships
* Build and sustain strategic partnerships with industry, government, and nonprofit organizations to support research and technology commercialization.
* Oversee agreements for sponsored research, collaborative development, and intellectual property management.

Research Development and Faculty Support
* Lead programs to enhance faculty success in securing competitive funding from federal, state, and private sources.
* Oversee internal seed funding programs that promote high-impact research. Facilitate interdisciplinary and large-scale grant initiatives, providing strategic support and proposal development resources.
* Develop professional development opportunities for faculty and students in research, innovation, and technology transfer.

Operations, Policy, and Compliance
* Support transparent and effective administrative processes that enable research and innovation growth. Support policy development related to intellectual property, conflict of interest, and research commercialization.
* Manage budgets, personnel, and resources related to research and innovation operations.

Data, Metrics, and Reporting
* Collect and analyze data to measure research productivity, innovation outcomes, and economic impact.
* Prepare strategic reports and presentations for university leadership governing boards, and external agencies.
* Benchmark university performance against peers and identify areas for growth.



Qualifications

Minimal Qualifications:
* Terminal degree (PhD or equivalent) and record of scholarly achievement appropriate for a tenured appointment at the rank of full professor.
* Demonstrated leadership experience in research administration, technology transfer, and/or innovation management.
* Proven record of securing and supporting significant external funding from federal, state, and/or industry sources.
* Understanding of intellectual property management, technology licensing, and technology commercialization processes.

Preferred Qualifications:
* Success in developing public-private partnerships and engaging in economic development initiatives.
* Familiarity with research analytics and innovation performance metrics and tracking.

* Excellent communication, collaboration, and strategic planning abilities.
