Job Title: Animal Technician Location(s): San Francisco, CA Position Overview The Animal Technician supports laboratory research operations through daily animal care, sanitation, health monitoring, and facility maintenance. The role involves working with laboratory animals, primarily rodents, while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and institutional animal care regulations. Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily husbandry and care for laboratory animals.
- Change cages, racks, bedding, food, and water supplies.
- Clean and sanitize animal rooms, cages, and equipment.
- Operate cage washers and autoclaves for sterilization.
- Monitor animal health and report concerns to veterinary or compliance staff.
- Maintain accurate records including:
- Animal health surveillance
- Feed and sanitation logs
- Temperature and humidity records
- Animal receipt/disposition documentation
- Support regulatory compliance and facility standards.
- Perform basic technical procedures as needed to support research teams.
- Use computers and handheld devices for documentation and communication.
Required Skills & Knowledge
- Minimum 1 year of animal handling or lab animal sanitation experience.
- Knowledge of laboratory animal husbandry and housing standards.
- Understanding of sanitation, disinfectants, and sterilization procedures.
- Familiarity with federal animal care regulations.
- Ability to identify and communicate animal health concerns.
- Basic computer proficiency including email and electronic reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently and follow detailed procedures.
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, bending, kneeling, reaching, and walking on hard surfaces.
- Ability to wear required PPE daily.
- Ability to push/pull equipment and lift up to 50 lbs.
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Preferred:
- AALAS Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician-equivalent training plus 1 year of experience
OR - 2 years of relevant animal care experience
OR - Equivalent combination of education and experience
