Overview:

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a system integrator who will focus on the design, fabrication and function of laboratory furnaces, reactors and control systems including gas delivery and pneumatic controls. This position resides in the Ceramics and Ceramic Composites (CCC) Group, Materials Processing Science and Engineering (MPSE) Section of the Materials Science and Technology Division (MSTD), Physical Sciences Directorate (PSD). The individual will also interact and coordinate with other team members in other ORNL Research Divisions.

As part of our research team, you will collaborate with senior technical staff who are world leaders in ceramic science and engineering through sponsorship from the US Department of Energy's Transportation Technology Office as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration. Your role will be to provide a comprehensive understanding of the laboratory furnaces, reactors and control systems and integrate and help drive ongoing efforts to improve their performance and safety.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the design, fabrication, and function of:
    • laboratory furnaces and control systems
    • laboratory gas delivery and pneumatic control systems
    • CVD and CVI systems
  • Proficiency with instrument metrology and calibration programs
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff and craft support
  • Coordinate task efforts within a highly collaborative environment of national laboratories, industry, and academic partners.
  • Documenting results where required.
  • Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
  • Work with a variety of teams in addressing needs of multiple heat treatment and manufacturing processes.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in material science and engineering, mechanical engineering, industrial engineering, or a related discipline
  • 8-12 years of experience in gas detection and control systems
  • Experience with experimental, custom laboratory equipment construction and implementation
  • Supervision of crafts in a bargaining unit environment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experienced with:
    • Rockwell Automation Studio 5000 PLC integrator training:
      • RSLogix 5000 Level 4: Structured Text/Sequential Function Chart Programming
      • FactoryTalk View ME Graphical Terminal Programming
      • Studio 5000 Logix Designer
      • Micro800 & PanelView 800
    • Toyota lean manufacturing (TPS) or a related training
    • Gas detection and monitoring systems design as well as gas control systems
    • Festo CPX-A and CPX-I pneumatic and digital IO distributed control systems
    • Design of distributed control systems using IO-Link, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, and other industrial network protocols
    • Design of industrial control panels to UL-508A and UL-61010 standards
    • Electrical enclosure and system fabrication
    • Knowledge and proficiency of CVD and CVI system design and function
  • QEW 3
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Experience working with radiological materials
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs
  • Experience using tools such as 5 Whys and fishbone diagrams for root cause analysis
  • Familiarity with Software Quality Assurance requirements

Special Requirements:

  • Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
  • This position requires submission to random and incident-specific polygraphs.
  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.
