Tesla is seeking a Manager, Equipment Engineering to lead equipment engineering for crystalline silicon manufacturing at a massive 100 GW scale. Reporting to the Sr. Production Engineering Manager, you will own day-to-day equipment performance, uptime, and technical recovery for an assigned area - Ingot, Wafer, or Cell, depending on experience. You will lead equipment engineers and technicians to deliver machine availability, stable process hardware, and fast, high-quality response to equipment losses during greenfield launch and ramp. This is a hands-on leadership role for someone who thrives on the floor, can provide technical development to team members, and has a proven ability to improve OEE through equipment optimization. This role is core to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to amazing abundance.
What You'll Do
- Lead, coach, and develop a team of equipment engineers and technicians across shifts to hit equipment availability, repair quality, and production-support goals
- During greenfield launch and ramp, own equipment readiness and performance for assigned tools supporting processes such as Czochralski crystal pulling, diamond wire saw slicing, texturing, wafer cleaning, thin film deposition, screen printing, and laser operations
- Drive rapid response and structured recovery on equipment downtime and chronic hardware issues
- Partner with Maintenance on PM effectiveness, downtime windows, spare criticality, and workmanship standards so planned and unplanned work protects output
- Track and improve equipment KPIs including availability, MTTR, MTBF, and OEE
- Support equipment installs, commissioning, upgrades, and change control with Manufacturing Engineering, Process Engineering, Production, and vendors
- Enforce safety protocols on equipment work (including LOTO discipline), lead or support incident investigations to root cause, and drive corrective actions to closure
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Mechatronics, or related Engineering, or equivalent experience
- 9+ years in equipment engineering, equipment maintenance leadership, or manufacturing equipment operations in semiconductor, solar, battery, or related high-volume automated manufacturing
- Experience leading engineers and/or technicians in a fast-paced, multi-shift manufacturing environment
- Hands-on strength troubleshooting complex electro-mechanical, vacuum, wet, thermal, robotic, or precision manufacturing equipment
- Strong understanding of equipment and production metrics including machine availability, OEE, MTTR/MTBF, and cycle time impacts
- Proven ability to drive accountability, coach technical talent, and work cross-functionally with Process Engineering, Maintenance, Production, and Quality
- Proficiency with data analysis tools, CMMS and/or MES systems; capability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally (more during build, less during HVM and sustaining)
