Job Summary
The Director of EHS will serve as the chief architect of our safety culture and environmental compliance strategy. This role oversees all EHS functions across 6 manufacturing and mining sites. You will lead a core corporate team while providing strategic oversight and technical support to site-level EHS professionals. The ideal candidate is a high-level communicator capable of securing federal environmental permits one day and conducting a safety "toolbox talk" with hourly staff the next.
Essential Duties
- Strategic Leadership & Impact: Develop and execute a multi-year EHS roadmap that aligns with corporate goals and industry best practices. Develop departmental plans-including business, production, and organizational priorities-guided by organization functional business plans. Impact department results by supporting and funding projects, services, and technologies, while navigating decisions based on resource availability and organizational objectives.
- Operational Oversight & Team Leadership: Provide leadership to managers and professional staff, acting as accountable leader for the performance and results of multiple related teams across the 6 production sites. Provide indirect leadership and mentorship to EHS leads, ensuring consistency in safety standards and reporting. Allocate resources effectively to align with business objectives and the annual plan.
- Cross-Level Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Serve as the primary EHS liaison across the entire organization. Utilize strong interpersonal skills to persuade managers and leaders to take action, and negotiate with external partners, vendors, and customers. You must be equally effective at presenting risk profiles to Senior Leadership/Executives as you are at building trust and engagement with hourly employees on the front lines.
- Business Acumen & Problem Solving: Apply knowledge of key business drivers to maximize department performance. Identify and solve complex operational and organizational problems by leveraging the appropriate resources within or outside the department.
- Predictive Risk Management & Total Worker Health: Lead incident investigation processes using Root Cause Analysis (RCA), while simultaneously developing and leveraging leading indicators to proactively identify and mitigate risks before incidents occur. Champion holistic worker health initiatives that expand beyond traditional physical hazards to encompass industrial hygiene, fatigue management, and employee wellness. Evaluate and direct the annual employee health screening program. Oversee near-hit/accident/injury investigations and support the Human Resources team in evaluating workers compensation cases.
- Environmental Permitting: Direct and oversee all environmental permitting processes at both the State and Federal levels (e.g., Title V Air, Mining, NPDES Water, and land reclamation permits).
- Regulatory Oversight: Maintain complete compliance with all regulatory bodies, including MSHA, OSHA, and EPA, as well as relevant state and local requirements. Proactively manage the evolving regulatory landscape by engaging with industry peers, trade associations, and regulatory agencies (Federal, State, and Local). Foster and maintain strong working relationships with these agencies. Assist site personnel with agency inspections including MSHA, OSHA, and CalOSHA, and other HS related regulating agencies and meeting associated reporting deadlines in a timely; review and guide external reporting and communications with these regulatory agencies
- Industrial Hygiene: Manage Industrial Hygiene Program and supervise one direct employee and multiple indirect employees to monitor and improve IH across the company
- Community Engagement: Establish a routine engagement plan with key stakeholders in surrounding communities to foster strong neighborly relationships. Effectively manage and resolve community complaints, and develop sustainable programs to ensure responsible stewardship.
- Corporate Security: Working closely with the Global Head of Physical Security to implement security strategy, policies, and standards for the physical safety of all employees, customers, and visitors to the organization's facilities.
Qualifications Required
- Bachelor's Degree Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. required
- minimum of 10 years of progressive EHS leadership experience in an industrial environment.
- Industry Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in Mining (MSHA) and/or Manufacturing (OSHA). Preference will be given to candidates with experience in both.
- Permitting Expertise: Proven track record of successfully managing complex environmental permits and maintaining positive relationships with state and federal regulatory agencies.
- Multi-Site Leadership: Proven ability to lead and influence teams across multiple geographic locations.
- EHS Technology & Predictive Analytics: Experience selecting, deploying, and managing enterprise EHS software platforms (e.g., Velocity, Enablon, Intelex) and leveraging predictive safety technologies (e.g., data analytics, leading indicator tracking, or safety wearables).
- Incident response and crisis management: Developing and maintaining Business Continuity Plans (BCP) and Emergency Action Plans (EAP) that align with the broader business goals.
Qualifications Preferred
- Professional certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager).

Base salary and/or rate of pay ranges listed are exclusive of fringe benefits and potential bonuses. Individual compensation offers will be determined based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to geographic location, relevant candidate experience and skill, education, and/or qualifications.
Base Salary Range: $128,000-$176,000
