SUMMARY:

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is seeking an academic trauma, acute care, and critical care surgeon to join our faculty. The position will be based primarily at Rhode Island Hospital, the state's only Level I Trauma Center and the principal teaching hospital of Brown University, with additional opportunities across Brown-affiliated hospitals.

This faculty role is 80% clinical, with responsibilities spanning trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. In addition to clinical care, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach, mentor, and collaborate with trainees in a rich academic environment. The Division supports a robust General Surgery Residency Program and an ACGME-accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, as well as providing broad educational opportunities for medical students.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position is hospital-based, and the applicant will be expected to participate in patient care activities, teaching of medical students and training of general surgery residents.

  • Teaching (10%) Participation as a preceptor in the Core Clerkship in Surgery, Fellowship in Trauma/critical care and the clinical elective for medical students enrolled at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and the teaching programs of the Department of Surgery at Rhode Island Hospital, which includes residents in General Surgery and fellows- as well as interdisciplinary teaching programs with other Divisions and Departments within the hospital and the medical school.
  • Research (up to 10%) Pursue basic, translational or clinical research programs pertaining to the field. Participate in national, regional, and institutional clinical research protocols at Rhode Island Hospital and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
  • Patient Care (80-90%) Participate in the clinical aspects of the division, including the inpatient service, call coverage, ICU and the outpatient clinics. Other clinical responsibilities include performing procedures pertinent to trauma/critical care and general surgery.
  • Service Responsibilities Maintain a positive working relationship in all activities of the Division of Acute Care Surgery within the Department of Surgery and The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. This includes attending Faculty and Staff meetings, serving on Medical School, Hospital, and Department committees, and working with faculty, the Division Chief and the Chair of Surgery of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University to facilitate the achievements of the department and the division.
  • Faculty appointment will be made at a rank commensurate with experience and qualifications. We seek candidates committed to advancing our missions of clinical care, education, and scholarship. There is strong support for academic pursuits, particularly in outcomes research, quality improvement, health services research, surgical education, and innovation in trauma and critical care delivery.

About Rhode Island Hospital and Brown Surgery:

Rhode Island Hospital is the largest teaching hospital of Brown University and the region's only Level I Trauma Center, providing comprehensive trauma, acute care surgery, and surgical critical care services. It is also home to Brown's ACGME-accredited Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, offering unique opportunities to teach, mentor, and collaborate with fellows and residents in the ICU and operative settings. LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Board certification or eligibility in general surgery
  • Specialty certification in trauma/critical care

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS:

  • Strong clinical background in acute care surgery, trauma and critical care; opportunity available in burn care; and scholarly participation in the research and educational programs of The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
  • Have completed fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care (and/or Trauma/Acute Care Surgery).
  • Demonstrate excellence in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and critical care.
  • Show enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring surgical residents, fellows, and medical students.
  • Contribute to scholarly activity aligned with an academic surgical career.
  • Thrive in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, including ICU leadership.
  • Faculty appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor rank at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, contingent upon qualifications.
