THE POSITION

As a Commonwealth Public Service Intern with the Department of Transportation, District 10, you will step into a role that blends hands-on learning with meaningful public service. This experience exposes you to engineering activities that shape safe and reliable transportation systems. You will explore design, construction, and maintenance tasks that deepen your understanding of real-world projects. This internship provides strong preparation for your future career while allowing you to make a positive impact on your community.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position offers structured training that helps you learn how transportation projects are planned, built, and maintained across District 10. As a Commonwealth Public Service Intern, you will perform the following duties:

  • Construction Support: Observe construction activities and review inspection practices for resurfacing, drainage, and structural work
  • Material Review: Assist in checking placement, testing, and documentation of materials used on active projects
  • Design Exposure: Observe design plan development and support tasks such as quantity take-offs and cost estimates
  • Maintenance Learning: Participate in maintenance views, data collection, and planning discussions for roadway operations
  • Safety Awareness: Follow safety protocols, attend safety briefings, and report unsafe conditions during field activities

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Internship
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Scheduled hours may vary based on assignment within the rotation
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Current enrollment as a full-time undergraduate student in an accredited college/university in a declared bachelor's degree program and successful completion of at least sixty (60) college credits at the time of hire. Full time undergraduate students who have successfully completed at least thirty (30) college credits and anticipate the completion of at least sixty (60) college credits at the time of hire may apply for this program; or
  • Current enrollment as a graduate student in an accredited college/university in a declared master's or doctorate degree program at the time of hire.
