Automotive Mechanic Intern (High School)

As an Automotive Mechanic Intern with the Department of Transportation, you will train in a busy garage where real vehicles and equipment are repaired every day. You will learn important skills that help you stand out when you start your career. This internship gives you professional experience and teaches you how a mechanic shop operates. It is a great chance to learn, earn and take the first step toward your future in automotive technology.

This internship teaches you how to work safely and effectively in an automotive garage while gaining experience in repairs, diagnostics and maintenance. It introduces you to a wide range of mechanical skills used on vehicles and equipment. As an Automotive Mechanic Intern, you will perform the following duties:

• Perform Vehicle Repairs: Assist with repair, overhaul, and maintenance of cars, trucks, and heavy equipment
• Replace Key Components: Install parts such as brakes, clutches, transmissions, and shock absorbers
• Conduct Diagnostics: Use tools and testing equipment to identify mechanical and electrical issues
• Complete Preventative Tasks: Carry out routine maintenance including tune-ups, tire changes, and minor body work
• Maintain Equipment Records: Update logs and reports to document work completed and parts used
• Follow Safety Procedures: Apply safety rules, report concerns, and practice safe habits in the work area

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• High school internship for the 2026-2027 school year.
• Work schedule will vary based on the agreement between the high school and Commonwealth of Pennsylvania (COPA) location.
• Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• You must be at least 16 years of age at time of hire.
• You must be a junior or senior enrolled in high school during the 2026 - 2027 school year.

• Letter of Recommendation: You must attach a Letter of Recommendation from your school's co-op coordinator, career or guidance counselor, or similar designated school professional indicating you meet your school's requirements and are being recommended for this opportunity.
• By participating in this program, the student and school agree to use the Commonwealth's Training Plan, Statement of Responsibilities, and Student Performance Evaluation. Forms will be provided to the student upon acceptance of this position.
• Work Permit: Minors will be required to submit their Work Permit upon acceptance of this position.
• Must be a vo-tech (career and technical center) student in an approved vocational program that has provided preparation and training for the duties of this internship.
• You must be able to perform essential job functions.
