THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position supports transportation operations by performing detailed maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on diesel and construction equipment. As a Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic, you will perform the following duties:

  • Vehicle Repair: Overhaul and repair cars, trucks and heavy equipment including transmissions, brakes, and electrical components
  • Preventative Maintenance: Carry out diagnostics, tune-ups and system adjustments to maintain engines, cooling systems, and fuel components
  • State Inspections: Complete safety and emissions inspections, perform required repairs, and document results accurately
  • Equipment Diagnostics: Use diagnostic tools to identify issues, determine repair steps, and service motorized hand equipment
  • Safety Procedures: Maintain a clean work area, follow protective practices, and report incidents to reduce hazards
  • Technical Support: Assist other mechanics, demonstrate repair techniques, and maintain detailed equipment records

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime and travel may be required. Work hours subject to seasonal change. Dual shifts 4:00 AM to 12:00 PM or 12:00 PM to 8:00 PM,
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the commonwealth's Diesel and Construction Equipment Mechanic Trainee program (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • Two years of journey level mechanic experience in the diagnosis and repair of automobiles, heavy trucks, or construction equipment, which includes one year of experience in the diagnosis and repair of diesel vehicles or equipment; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:
  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver's License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) and Manual Transmission Restriction (E) removed or equivalent.
  • This position requires possession of an active Tank Vehicle Endorsement (N).
  • This position requires employees to pass the Department of Transportation's New Mechanic Training course during the probationary period.

Additional Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Medical Examiner's Certificate in accordance with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations at time of application.
  • This position requires an active Pennsylvania Class 4 or Class 7 Inspection Mechanic Certification at time of application.
  • This position is subject to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with Federal Regulations.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Preferred Qualification (not required):
  • Possession of an active Hazardous Materials Endorsement (H).
