THE POSITION

The Welder position with the Department of Transportation offers a chance to work with a dedicated team that keeps essential equipment in top condition. You will work with a variety of materials and machinery that help keep operations moving. This role allows you to build your skills while contributing to public safety and reliable transportation.



DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on performing skilled welding and fabrication work that keeps transportation equipment and structures in safe working order. As a Welder, you will perform the following duties:

  • Metal Preparation: Prepare metals by heating, cleaning, cutting, and fitting them for welding tasks
  • Welding Operations: Perform welding using arc, acetylene, or mig equipment on bridges, vehicles, and machinery
  • Fabrication Work: Fabricate new parts and replace damaged components for a wide range of equipment
  • Tool Operation: Safely operate power tools and air tools to support welding and fabrication activities
  • Equipment Handling: Operate motorized equipment such as forklifts and bucket trucks during work procedures
  • Mechanical Tasks: Complete basic mechanical duties including mounting or removing plow frames and related components

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Seasonal, full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • There may be mandatory or unscheduled overtime associated with operational and seasonal needs.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Three years of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures; or
  • Completion of a three-year, high school Vo-Tech training program in welding and eighteen months of experience in the operation and use of welding equipment, materials, and related shop equipment to repair, maintain, or fabricate parts, equipment, or structures; or
  • Completion of an approved welder apprentice program; or
  • A welding certificate D1.1 from the American Welding Society; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.

Special Requirements:

  • This position requires possession of an active Pennsylvania Class C Driver's License.

Additional Requirements:

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
