The Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is a nationally recognized academic department dedicated to excellence in patient care, research, and education. As one of the fastest-growing clinical departments within the School of Medicine, the Department provides comprehensive dermatologic care across multiple clinical sites throughout Orange County and serves as a regional referral center for complex skin diseases.
The Department supports a diverse and dynamic portfolio of activities, including a robust clinical enterprise, nationally recognized residency and fellowship training programs, and a growing research program supported by federal, foundation, and industry funding. Faculty are leaders in medical dermatology, dermatologic surgery, skin cancer, inflammatory skin diseases, regenerative medicine, and women's skin health.
An integral component of the Department is its expanding Dermatopathology Laboratory, which provides high-quality diagnostic services in support of UCI Health's clinical mission. Your Role on the Team
Uses skills as a seasoned and experienced administrative operations professional to manage, plan and administer the operations of a small to mid-sized academic or non-academic department or organizational unit with limited scope. May report to a chair, director, or a higher-level administrative operations professional or manager. Perform short- and long-term planning for the organization. May supervise staff or students. Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Your Role on the Team
The Department of Dermatology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine is seeking a highly organized and motivated professional to support the operations and growth of its Dermatopathology Laboratory. As part of one of the fastest-growing clinical departments within the School of Medicine, the laboratory provides specialized diagnostic services that support patient care across UCI Health and the broader community.
Under the direction of department and laboratory leadership, the Dermatopathology Business Manager is responsible for coordinating the day-to-day administrative and business operations of the laboratory. The incumbent works closely with faculty, laboratory staff, clinical teams, and external partners to support efficient workflows, maintain operational effectiveness, and ensure high-quality service delivery.
The position assists with financial management activities, including monitoring revenues and expenses, preparing reports, tracking key performance metrics, and supporting budgeting processes. The Business Manager helps identify operational and financial improvement opportunities and provides analysis to support departmental decision-making. A successful candidate would be willing and able to step in to assist with day to day operational roles in this small growing laboratory as needed. In addition, the incumbent supports business development and outreach efforts designed to expand laboratory services within the community. Responsibilities include assisting with client relationship management, supporting contract administration, coordinating marketing and outreach initiatives, and helping identify opportunities for growth. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational, analytical, and communication skills and thrive in a collaborative healthcare environment.

- Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
- Ability to lead discussions, to particulate test procedures, and to make effective presentations.
- Utilize effective listening and questioning techniques.
- Knowledge of personal computer, word processing, data management, and spreadsheet software.
- Adherence to excellent customer service principles.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- 3-5 years of management experience within a complex healthcare setting.
Preferred:
- Thorough knowledge of University rules and regulations, processes, protocols and procedures for budget, accounting and fund management, and / or personnel management.
- Solid knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs
- Thorough knowledge and understanding of laboratory process
