About the Role
We are seeking a Senior Tax Adviser to support Woodside's US direct tax function. This role will join a highly collaborative team, supporting tax leadership and coaching other tax team members while leading the delivery of tax advice and execution of tax processes in assigned areas. The successful candidate will provide technical, quantitative and implementation support for projects, coordinate with internal stakeholders, engage external advisers on technical and procedural matters, and help deliver best practice service and outcomes to internal and external stakeholders.
Duties and Responsibilities
US Tax Accounting, Provision and Reporting
- Review US tax provision computations in accordance with IFRS guidelines, including taxable income calculations, deferred tax roll forwards, effective tax rate analyses and uncertain tax positions.
- Review current and deferred tax provision deliverables, tax proofs, reconciliations and related reporting controls.
- Maintain audit-ready support for tax positions and ensure alignment with Woodside reporting requirements and internal governance expectations.
- Coordinate with accounting, finance and external audit stakeholders to support half-year, year-end and other reporting deliverables.
Federal and State Income Tax Compliance
- Oversee preparation and filing of US partnership and corporate income tax returns, including Forms 1065, K-1 and 1120.
- Ensure compliance with federal and state income tax laws and maintain complete, well-supported workpapers for return positions and filings.
- Coordinate and review the development of tax positions and advice that are accurate, supportable and optimally beneficial to the Company.
- Review new US tax legislation and develop plans to implement new rules, requirements and process impacts.
Tax Advisory, Projects and Business Partnering
- Provide commercially focused US direct tax advice to commercial, legal, accounting and other group functions.
- Maintain strong relationships with relevant business stakeholders to ensure Tax is aware of new business developments and able to provide timely input.
- Provide tax support for growth and M&A activities, including business entry analysis, structuring analysis and implementation support.
- Coordinate technical, quantitative and implementation support for projects, including engagement with internal stakeholders and external advisers.
Governance, Controversy and Leadership
- Assist with US direct tax controversies as they arise, including coordination of responses, documentation and adviser engagement.
- Identify US direct tax risks, recommend mitigation actions and escalate significant exposures, judgments or control matters as appropriate.
- Support and coach other tax team members, including review of technical work and delivery against agreed priorities.
- Contribute to process improvement, control enhancement and effective use of tax systems, including SAP and OneSource.
Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications
- Undergraduate degree in accounting or a related field.
- 15+ years of income tax experience, including significant US direct tax experience.
- Demonstrated experience reviewing US tax provisions and income tax compliance deliverables.
- Experience with federal and state tax laws, partnership and corporate income tax returns, and tax accounting under IFRS.
- Strong technical, quantitative, analytical, research and documentation skills.
- Ability to lead complex workstreams, manage competing deadlines and communicate clearly with senior stakeholders.
Preferred Experience
- Experience with SAP, OneSource or comparable ERP and tax reporting systems.
- Experience supporting growth projects, M&A activities, business entry analysis or implementation workstreams.
- Experience supporting US direct tax controversies, audits or information requests.
- Experience coordinating external advisers and reviewing technical advice.
- Oil and gas, energy, capital-intensive or multinational corporate tax experience.
