Primary Purpose of Position
The Academy at Middle Fork uses an innovative, team-based teaching model that promotes co-teaching and fair practices. The Teacher Assistant will be a member of a collaborative grade-level span and will use co-teaching and small group instructional strategies to meet the needs of students. They will play an integral role in assisting with the implementation and facilitation of a robust academic program for students. This role provides a broad range of services that assist students in developing skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning. The Teacher Assistant uses a variety of instructional strategies to meet the academic, social, and behavioral needs of students.
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from high school; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Diplomas or degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

The University of North Carolina System Laboratory School initiative was established by the North Carolina General Assembly to provide enhanced educational programming to improve student performance and to plan demonstration sites for the preparation of future teachers and school administrators. Appalachian State University is the only UNC System institution to operate two of the System's nine lab schools - the App State Academy at Middle Fork and the App State Academy at Elkin.
The Academy at Middle Fork uses an innovative, team-based teaching model that promotes co-teaching and fair practices. The teacher assistant provides a broad range of services that assist students in developing skills, attitudes, and knowledge needed as a foundation for future learning. The teacher assistant uses a variety of instructional strategies to meet the academic, social, and behavioral needs of students.
Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Model and meet the expectations of the Portrait of a Lab School Team Member.
  • Assist in creating fair and welcoming classroom communities.
  • Support the creation of clear expectations and norms for classroom communities.
  • Assist with maintaining and using the expectations established in the classroom.
  • Use restorative practices to address learning and behavior needs.
  • Foster a growth mindset in the classroom.
  • Communicate with students and families through positive and respectful dialogue.
  • Actively engage with colleagues, school administration, the local community, and university partners to cultivate a collaborative school environment.
  • Assist with the implementation of innovative, integrated, and inquiry-based lesson plans that are student-centered and based on constructivist approaches.
  • Assist with utilizing instructional materials to support evidence-based teaching strategies.
  • Work with individual students and/or lead small group instruction.
  • Assist with the assessment of the progress of students regularly using a variety of assessment methods.
  • Provide coverage for students on Enrichment Fridays.
  • Assist with facilitating special programming for students.
  • Fully understand and follow expectations set forth by the staff handbook.
  • Maintain appropriate work habits, including regular, punctual attendance and appropriate use of time.
  • Attend and be fully engaged in staff meetings and other committee meetings.
  • Participate in training and professional development.
  • Follow a plan for professional development and demonstrate evidence of growth.
  • Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, families, and teachers in accordance with accepted professional ethics and state and federal laws.
  • Share responsibility during the school day for the supervision of students in areas of the school.
  • Comply with state and federal education statutes, including the NC Code of Ethics for Educators.

Preferred Qualifications

  • An Associate's or Bachelor's Degree in a related field
  • Previous experience working in a school setting

Communication - Verbal

  • Constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students; monitor student attitudes and encourage self-esteem; assist students with becoming increasingly independent.
  • Monitor student behavior and help maintain discipline in the classroom; assist with crisis prevention; restrain students as needed in accordance with established procedures.
  • Assists students, parents, other persons coming into office as needed.
  • Assist students with learning; reinforce and clarify instructions; conduct short sessions on improving study skills; provide one-on-one assistance as needed.
  • Assist teachers with executing instruction and evaluating its effectiveness.


Problem Solving

  • Supervise students checking in and out of school for illness, doctor appointments as needed.
  • Feed students, when necessary; toilet students, if needed; and assist with any other tasks students are not able to perform for themselves.
  • Perform general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom.

  • Develop classroom displays and instructional materials; maintain and operate audiovisual equipment.
Program Knowledge
