As an Application Developer, you will join a team building software solutions that enable teams across IDEXX to access and utilize the data they need to support product development and innovation. This is an onsite role based in Westbrook, ME. Willingness to work onsite five days per week is required, with occasional flexibility as needed. The team develops and supports the software platforms, services, and integrations that connect critical data to the teams responsible for delivering IDEXX products and solutions.

In this role:
  • You will design, build, test, deploy, and continuously improve mission-critical software, including web applications and backend services that support product development initiatives.

  • You will collaborate with technical and business stakeholders to understand challenges, identify opportunities, and deliver practical software solutions that meet business needs.

  • You will partner with cross-functional teams across IDEXX to ensure data systems and applications effectively support product development and operational goals.

  • You will apply strong analytical and problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues, identify root causes, and develop effective solutions to complex technical challenges.

  • You will contribute to the design of scalable, reliable, and maintainable software systems that support business growth and evolving product needs.

  • You will help product teams understand technical considerations and potential risks while identifying opportunities for improvement.

  • You will learn new technologies, frameworks, and tools as needed and apply them to solve business problems in a rapidly evolving environment.

  • You will work as a self-directed team member who values collaboration, continuous learning, and delivering high-quality solutions.

What you need to succeed:

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • 2+ years of professional software development experience.

  • Strong fundamentals in software design and programming, across languages and paradigms (e.g., object-oriented).

  • Experience designing, building, and maintaining RESTful APIs and web services.

  • Demonstrated ability to quickly learn new languages, frameworks, and technologies and apply them to unfamiliar business domains.

  • Qworking with a relational database in a production environment (e.g., MySQL) and an ORM/persistence framework (e.g., Spring Data JPA, Hibernate).

  • Familiarity with authentication, authorization, and session management concepts, including frameworks such as Spring Security.

  • Strong problem-solving, troubleshooting, and analytical skills with the ability to work through complex technical challenges.

Strongly Preferred

  • Experience with the technology stack used by one of our applications, notably Java (21 preferred) or Kotlin with Spring Boot/Spring MVC/Spring Context & Transactions, though other applications use different technologies such as Go, Python, or C/C++.

  • Comfort working across the full technology stack, including frontend development with Angular (v14+), TypeScript, HTML5, JavaScript, and CSS.

  • Experience using cloud service SDKs, preferably AWS services such as S3, SQS, SNS, Lambda, or similar managed services.

  • Experience writing automated tests using frameworks such as JUnit 5, Testcontainers, or similar tools.

  • Working knowledge of Docker and containerized application deployment.

  • Experience incorporating Generative AI development tools and spec-driven development workflows such as OpenSpec or similar approaches.

Preferred

  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform.

  • Experience working with additional AWS services such as EC2, API Gateway, and IAM.

  • Exposure to DynamoDB or other NoSQL database technologies.

  • Exposure to Snowflake, Databricks, or similar data platforms.

  • Experience maintaining or modernizing legacy AngularJS and Bootstrap applications.

  • Exposure to end-to-end testing tools such as Playwright.

  • Experience using code quality and observability tools such as SonarQube, Datadog, CloudWatch, or similar technologies.

Our tech stack:

This role's immediate project is built on Java (21+) with Spring Boot, MySQL, and an Angular/TypeScript frontend, deployed on AWS (ECS Fargate, RDS, SNS/SQS) with Docker, Terraform, and GitHub Actions for CI/CD. More broadly, our engineering organization spans a range of modern languages, frameworks, and data stores - we look for engineers who bring strong fundamentals and can move fluidly across tools as the work requires.

  • Base salary range starting at $102,000 based on experience
