Construction Support Engineer - Propulsion Plant Fluids Systems

Overview

The Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems team plays a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and performance of submarine propulsion systems. Candidates hired for this position will directly support critical deckplate operations, continuous improvement initiatives, and key facility infrastructure activities that enable firsttime quality and efficient construction of the Navy's most advanced submarines.

The VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems division consists of two groups: (1) Reactor Plant Fluid Systems and (2) Steam Plant Fluid Systems. Each group is dedicated to developing technical solutions and supporting construction and test activities at Electric Boat's Groton shipyard, Quonset Point manufacturing facility, and Newport News Shipbuilding. The primary location for this position is at the Groton, CT shipyard, with potential, but infrequent, travel to Quonset Point, RI necessary on a case basis. As a Propulsion Plant Construction Support Engineer, candidates hired to this position will work handson with shipyard nuclear and non-nuclear Trades organizations, test groups, and technical authorities to resolve challenges, drive firsttime quality, and contribute to continuous improvement efforts that enhance manufacturability and reduce construction span time. An experienced mentor is assigned to each new engineer to provide on-the-job training and guidance.

Responsibilities

Proactive engagement with pipefitters, welders, machinists, and Test organizations to anticipate issues, remove barriers, and ensure on time, first time quality execution of work.
• Development of sound technical rationale and recommendations for Government approval authorities (NNL, BPMI) and the Navy when addressing non conformances.
• Support feasibility studies, engineering evaluations, and on-hull implementation of design changes aimed at improving performance, acoustics, reliability, or producibility.
• Collaborate with other engineering organizations, work planning, and construction teams to streamline processes and enhance system build and test efficiency.
• Learn from experienced mentors and grow into increasing levels of technical and program responsibility.

Required:

• Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Engineering or related technology field
• 0-5 years of professional engineering experience

Preferred:

• Bachelor of Science degree (or higher) in Mechanical, Marine, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering
• 2-5 years of professional engineering experience or prior submarine operating experience
• Active DOD Secret clearance
• Prior Naval Nuclear Program experience

• Proficiency in root-cause analysis tools (5Why, FMEA, etc.)
