Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Reporting to the Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, the Assistant Professor of Computer Science is a full-time, tenure-track position beginning in Fall 2027.

The Department of Computer Science at Widener University seeks candidates with strong teaching experience who are passionate about student success and committed to creating an environment of inclusive excellence where our students can thrive and achieve success in their chosen fields. We welcome candidates who are enthusiastic about teaching, research, mentoring undergraduate students, contributing to a collaborative academic community, and helping shape the future growth of our programs. The successful candidate is expected to teach three or four courses per semester, actively engage in research in their field of interest, serve on university, college, and/or department committees, and advise undergraduate students.

The Department of Computer Science at Widener University is a small, collegial, and student-focused department that provides a supportive environment for both faculty and students. The department offers undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, the interdisciplinary Digital Media Informatics, and our new Bachelor of Science program in Artificial Intelligence.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

Essential duties:

Teaching

• Teach lecture classes for first- and second-year Computer Science majors and non-majors.
• Teach upper-level electives for junior and senior Computer Science majors and non-majors.
• Develop course materials and assessments that foster critical thinking and content mastery.
• Evaluate student performance and provide constructive feedback.
• Maintain regular weekly office hours to provide academic support and guidance to students enrolled in assigned courses.

Research

• To be active in research in their field of interest
• To involve students in research

Mentorship

• Advise and mentor undergraduate students.

Service

• Attend division, College, and University faculty meetings and contribute to department initiatives.

Secondary Responsibilities:

• Perform other job-related duties as assigned and participation in the intellectual life of the Department, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the University.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (education/training and experience required):

Required:

• Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Experience and commitment to excellence in teaching at the college level.
• Commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging in teaching and service.
• Active in research in their field of interest
• Highest degree from an accredited university or college

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND/OR UNUSUAL HOURS:

• Must be available for in-person instruction.
• Must be able to sit for extended periods while working at a computer or grading papers, and the ability lecture in a classroom.
• Must have the ability to speak clearly and audibly to deliver lectures, facilitate classroom discussions and interact with students and colleagues.
• Must have the ability to move around campus to attend meetings and teach in different classrooms.
• Minimal lifting may be involved for tasks such as carrying materials to class or moving books.
