Standards Designer, Senior or Lead

Responsible for drafting, designing, and maintaining electrical distribution standards, engineering drawings, and CAD documentation supporting Tucson Electric Power's Electrical Service Requirements, Construction Materials, Transmission and Distribution Standards and Tools Catalogs. Collaborate with Engineers, Standards Committee Members, Manufacturers and internal stakeholders to develop, update, and standardize engineering drawings. Ensure the Company maintains accurate data and continually works to modernize CAD templates, symbols, and technical documentation used throughout the organization. Ensure all drafting deliverables conform to company standards, engineering practices, quality requirements, and safety expectations while supporting residential, commercial, and utility transmission and distribution projects. Work independently under the direction of an Engineer and plan own work within allotted budget and schedules.

• Drafting and design opportunities on distribution and transmission standards that include schematics, manufacturer drawing interpretation, block building and templates.
• Responsible for learning, understanding, and implementing CAD knowledge, learning client standards, practices, and procedures to ensure that work produced conforms to the client's standards and expectations. Responsible for knowing and following our standards, procedures, and processes, collaborating on design issues, and seeking guidance from those with more experience.
• Creates, updates, and maintains electric utility design templates and assists with asset records using AutoCAD. Supports Associate Engineers, Maximo, and Standards Committees with asset management initiatives by producing standards drawings, completing as-builts, maintaining Utility Network connectivity, and ensuring compliance with design standards and document control requirements.
• Audit templates ensuring compliance with utility drafting standards and regulatory requirements. Manage template revisions, documentation, and version control. Perform testing and validation of new template releases before production deployment.
• Ensure drafting templates support accurate electric asset data capture for integration into GIS, Utility Network, Maximo, and asset management systems. Incorporate required asset attributes, equipment identifiers, and engineering metadata into standard drawing formats. Support digital record accuracy throughout the asset lifecycle

Designer:

• Research design layouts and alternatives for small modification or revision projects.
• May require close supervision on new aspects of assignments.
• Assist experienced engineers or designers in large projects or standards creation.
• Assist in the review and revision of material and design standards.
• Create electronic drawing markups of rough sketches or initial design drawings.
• Become familiar with TEP-specific standards and associated industry standards or codes.
• Oversee the drafting and drawing process, providing timely feedback to questions and review of final product to meet project schedules.
• Work independently under the direction of an Associate Engineer and plan own work within allotted budget and schedules.
• Provide technical support for CADD design systems and software.
• Create CAD symbols for standard usage and drawing creation.

Senior:

• Researches design layouts and alternatives for small to medium- sized projects and assists experienced engineers or designers in large projects.
• May require supervision on new aspects or non-standard assignments.
• Independently prepares and reviews design deliverables.
• Provides technical guidance in applicable design processes.
• Provides direction to other design and drafting personnel in the use of tools and preparation of design deliverables.
• Assists Associate Engineers in the creation of standards and processes or procedures as needed or requested.
• May have several projects assigned at the same time.
• Manufactures drawing review.
• Conducts field walkdowns and gathers data from facilities.
• Translates standards, specifications, and code regulations into design.
• Comfortable with presenting departmental training material in front of others.

Lead:

• A top-level individual contributor who may be assigned any project that is within the section's responsibilities.
• Has primary responsibility for projects of any size or complexity.
• Requires minimal supervision in project assignments and requires guidance only on unusual or complex assignments.
• Follows approved standards in design with minor modifications.
• Provides leadership to the section and for projects from a technical standpoint.
• Is the primary source of training for the section and will share information openly.
• Acts as a technical mentor to new or less experienced designers.
• Demonstrates strong leadership skills and supports all decision-making with superior technical knowledge and economic analysis.
• Ability to work independently
• Time management, technical knowledge, and economic consideration are exhibited in all assignments.
• Present new ideas and continue to assist with keeping drafting standards and layouts up to date with the most modern programming and advancements.
• Develops procedure(s) for various functions within department's range of responsibilities with oversight.

Designer Minimum Qualifications:

• High school diploma and 1-2 years AutoCADD drafting coursework or Associate's degree (Drafting and Design Technology) or trade degree (i.e., AA in applied services or applied technology) or equivalent technical experience.
• 1-2 years professional experience.
• Familiar with conventional drafting symbols, computer graphics and automated drawing methods.
• Understanding of basic drafting red lines and markups.
• Strong communication skills.
• Excellent attention to detail, high level of accuracy and ability to QR own work.
• Handle multiple assignments concurrently, adjusting shifting priorities and meeting deadlines.
• Experience with Microsoft Suite.
• Experience with Adobe Acrobat Pro

Preferred Qualifications:

• Drafted and designed for electric utility, electrical distribution design, engineering design or construction work using CADD.
• Experience with Autodesk Raster Design.
• Worked with AutoCADD Vault, 3-D, civil and familiar with data links.
• Competency with AI (LLM)
• Proficiency with Microsoft TEAMS
• Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Vault Professional.
• Experience working with scaled drawings.
• Reviewed rough sketches, drawing specifications, and created conceptual drawings in computer-aided design software.
• Experience in drafting of electric utility standards.
• Ability to understand manufacturer cut sheets and drawings.

Senior Minimum Qualifications:

• Three (3) years' experience or equivalent, in an Electrical or Mechanical Designer role, and an associate's degree (Drafting and Design Technology) or trade degree (i.e. AA in applied services or applied technology)
• Able to notice oversights/mistakes and make appropriate changes or recommendations.
• Strong analytical capabilities

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3+ years of drafting experience with AutoCADD and in an engineering work environment.
• Drafted and designed for electric utility, electrical distribution design, engineering design, or construction work using CADD.
• Competency with Microsoft Suite.
• Ability to apply basic electrical or mechanical formulas, principles, and practices.
• Familiarity with materials for voltages ranging from Distribution to 500kV.
• Network of contacts within T&D, Engineering and Procurement departments.

Lead Minimum Qualifications:

• Six (6) years or equivalent experience in a Designer role with at least three (3) years at an electric utility company or illustrate equal competency.
• Independent work and decisions.
• Proficient in all aspects of time management, project organization, and technical analysis.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience presenting in front of large groups.
• Experience as a mentor or training individuals or small groups.
