Adjunct Faculty-Foundations Program

The Foundations Program at the School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University seeks adjunct faculty members that value foundations education as integral to an enriching BFA/BS experience, beginning Spring 2023. The ideal faculty member acts upon these values in a meaningful way within the program, becoming an active member of our creative community.

A Foundations faculty member teaches 4 to 8 credits within an 8-credit course in collaboration with up to 14 other faculty. They may at times work with large groups of students (up to 100), but more often work with small sections (approximately 16), providing one-on-one project guidance. All faculty should be prepared for weekly meetings and team grading.

The faculty member is expected to bring their expertise to a diverse team to collaborate on building experiences that align with the curriculum's objectives and mission. Beyond class time, faculty are expected to participate in collaborative planning and assessment.

The Foundations Program at the School of Art and Design, New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University is founded upon a historically progressive foundations studio model. The curriculum provides a vibrant, immersive first-year experience for SOAD's multidisciplinary, materially focused students within a energetic creative community. The program aims to be responsive to the nuanced needs of first year students and to provide an inclusive and equitable environment.

The School of Art and Design at Alfred University is an accredited member of NASAD, with 33 full-time faculty serving more than 400 students. The School is Unique among institutions of higher education with an open curriculum, allowing a robust and diverse experience in studio art, design, and art history courses. Students and faculty alike thrive in an intensive and supportive learning environment. School of Art and Design students are fully integrated into Alfred University's community of 2,000 students. (NYSCC) includes the School of Art and Design, the lnamori School of Engineering, and Scholes Library. The NYSCC was established in 1900 to advance research in art, design, and engineering. That intellectual and creative legacy exists in all of the areas of study in the School of Art and Design. The New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University has been a unique public/private partnership in higher education for more than 100 years.

Located in rural Western NY, Alfred University is the second oldest co-educational college in the United States and one of the earliest to have enrolled African-American and Native American students. Ideal candidates will demonstrate an appreciation of issues that matter to our university community, such as diversity and social justice.

Requirements:

• A graduate degree in art or design
• Committed to building an inclusive, creative community
• Commitment to supporting inclusion, diversity, equity and access in the classroom
• Holistic understanding of the first-year experience and first year student needs
• Skilled at collaborative work with colleagues
• Skilled at providing clear direction to students, in multiple communication modalities
• Ability to frame abstract art and design concepts in language for first year students
• Comfortable discussing a wide range of art and design work with students
• Knowledge about and ability to articulate contemporary art and design practice and history
• Approaches practice, teaching, students and teamwork with curiosity

Preferred:

• College-level teaching experience
• Experience working with first year students and a diverse student body
• Demonstrated interdisciplinary and/or multidisciplinary work, either teaching or practice
• Demonstrated collaborative work experience, either teaching or practice
• Experience with differentiated instruction
• Experience modulating teaching and communication strategies to large versus small groups
• Skilled at using the Socratic method or other inquiry-based approaches to student work development
• Globally engaged perspective and practice
• FATE involvement
