Psychiatric Technician - Residential Treatment Facility - 7 South

Currently recruiting a Psychiatric Technician to provide care to active duty military members and their families in the Residential Treatment Facility at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia. The Psychiatric Technician is a full-time position, 80 hours per two weeks, schedule can vary. Services are required twenty four (24) hours a day, seven (7) days a week (Sunday through Saturday) 365 days a year, including Federal holidays and Government Designated training holidays. Full benefits, including 17 days paid vacation/sick leave and 11 paid Federal holidays.

DUTIES OF THE PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN:

  • Demonstrate sound psychiatric/addictions nursing theoretical and practical approaches in providing patient care.
  • Demonstrate a sound understanding and assist in the management of a therapeutic milieu;providing structure, social support, patient education, safety and social skills training.
  • Monitor, escort and/or act as a therapeutic participant in patient activities in the Inpatient Residential Substance Abuse Program.
  • Provide care for patients utilizing proper infection control and safety techniques as planned and/or ordered.
  • Document per clinic policy and notify the mental health provider in charge of any abnormal or unusual findings in a timely manner.
  • Utilize therapeutic assessment and interview skills to illicit accurate and concise accounts of the patient s condition.
  • Document patient care using proper terminology that is in accordance with the clinic policy.
  • Utilize sound judgement and crisis intervention skills, including physical restraints to prevent or reverse situation which may be potentially harmful. Follow command clinic specific policies for Seclusion/Restraint, Elopement and Management of the Assaulted patient.
  • Exhibit a basic knowledge of psychotropic medications including actions, side effects and common dosages.
  • Follow command policies and procedures for the administration and documentation of scheduled and PRN medication.
  • Inform the mental health provider in charge of any errors, discrepancies, or adverse patient reactions.
  • Screen patients to determine presenting problems and priority. This may entail telephone triage or in person evaluation. Perform basic assessment procedures, including initial screening evaluation. Assist credentialed providers with identifying mental health diagnosis and treatment strategies, as well as providing patient education.
  • Assist in providing specialized treatment and rehabilitation of addiction patients. Assist in conducting individual and group therapy sessions. Observe, monitor, report and record patient interaction and progress. Institute precautionary measures to prevent patient injuries due to suicide, homicide or elopement.
  • Present or facilitate a variety of health and wellness programs in support of the clinic.
  • Provide care to addiction patients and participates in rehabilitation and treatment programs.
  • Measure and record patient s general physical condition, such as weight, pulse, temperature, and respiration, to provide daily information. Observe patients to detect behavior patterns and report observations to medical staff.
  • Co-facilitate prescribed individual or group therapy sessions as part of specific therapeutic procedures and independently facilitated educational groups.
  • Regularly interface with staff and patients to assess needs and continuously improve the quality of service delivered.
  • Prepare all records and reports as may be required in support of services rendered and as required by the MTF Standard Operating Procedures, Federal Law, or Service Regulation. All written reports and documentation shall be legible and/or entered correctly into ESSENTRIS, AHLTA or CHCS and shall be considered property of the government.

  • Comply with all safety procedures and practices associated with the facility and OSHA.
  • Document care given and the patient s response to the care provided in the Medical Record.
  • Prepare service reports and collect data as required by the MTF.
  • Assist with clinical/unit related administrative tasks.
  • Supports the Culture of Excellence initiative and adheres to the Fort Belvoir Community Hospital professional standards.


QUALIFICATIONS OF THE PSYCHIATRIC TECHNICIAN:

  • Degree/Education: Psychiatric Technician must have a minimum of a high school diploma or equivalence.
  • Experience: Have at least 2 years of substance abuse residential or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in substance abuse treatment experience.
  • US Citizenship required (for access to government computer systems).
  • BLS for Healthcare Providers
