Description

The Department of Theater at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Scenic Design at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor. We seek candidates whose knowledge and interests include the fields of Black Theater and/or Performance and the Global Majority. This appointment is expected to begin July 2025.

We seek a new colleague who will bring experience, conceptual rigor, experimentation, and vision to our program in Scenic Design. We welcome applicants with multi-disciplinary practices and/or interest in Human-Centered Design, Digital Humanities, Multicultural Music and Sound Studies, Environmental Studies, and Race and Gender Studies and/or whose research invites collaboration and interdisciplinary connections. Artistic practices essential for this position include: both traditional and digital rendering; hand drafting; model building; Vectorworks and/or Auto-Cad skills; knowledge of period styles and ornament; interest in digital projection for the performing arts; scenic painting skills; and property design, management, and construction.

Qualified candidates should demonstrate commitment to educating the next generation of theater makers and story tellers as well as to fostering collaborative thinking and creativity. They should show active interest in academic program-building, classroom teaching, mentoring student designers, and designing for department productions. They should possess leadership capability, including the ability to mentor and support faculty, develop curricula, construct syllabi, and assess student learning. Finally, they should have a demonstrated commitment to supporting the needs of a demographically diverse student body and production staff.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an MFA or equivalent professional experience in the arts, serious commitment to teaching as evidenced by a strong college-level teaching record, skilled knowledge of all aspects of Scenic Design, and significant professional achievement in the field. Qualified candidates should be prepared to participate in curricular development, administration of the department, student advising, and group evaluation of students working in all areas of Theater.
