Description

The Department of English at the University of Massachusetts Amherst invites applications for a full-time nine-month tenure-track faculty position, to begin September 1, 2025 at the rank of Assistant Professor, in Transnational British Literature After 1900 with a strong secondary area on the literatures and cultures of Africa.

In addition to a grounding in transnational British literature after 1900, we seek applications from candidates whose research and teaching interests include African regional and diasporic literatures and cultures. The areas of specialization are open, but we are particularly interested in research and teaching specializations in one or more of the following: postcolonial literature and theory; slavery and its afterlives; migration; environmental and/or medical humanities; gender, sexuality, and queer politics; political economy and global and racial capitalism; and film/media studies. The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate surveys as well as specialized courses in their fields. We encourage applications from candidates who will complement our departmental strengths in postcolonial literary studies and transnational American literature. Our department values diversity as a core element of academic excellence.

Requirements

Ph.D. in English or related field by time of appointment, successful research and teaching record, and commitment to participation in an active and energetic department.

Additional Information

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience, and the University offers an attractive benefits package.

Application Instructions

Along with the application, please submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; a 25-page sample of written work (as PDF); and contact information for three (3) professional references.

Applicants must apply by the priority deadline of November 7, 2024 to ensure full consideration.

The University is committed to active recruitment of a diverse faculty and student body. The University of Massachusetts Amherst is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer of women, minorities, protected veterans, and individuals with disabilities and encourages applications from these and other protected group members. Because broad diversity is essential to an inclusive climate and critical to the University's goals of achieving excellence in all areas, we will holistically assess the many qualifications of each applicant and favorably consider an individual's record working with students and colleagues with broadly diverse perspectives, experiences, and backgrounds in educational, research or other work activities. We will also favorably consider experience overcoming or helping others overcome barriers to an academic career and degree.
