DESCRIPTION

Working independently under the general supervision of the Assistant Registrar, Enrollment Services, the Veteran's Benefits Coordinator is responsible for staying up to date on all federal, state, and UC system wide programs, reporting, and compliance requirements in order to advise prospective and enrolled students, parents, and campus members regarding educational benefits. In this role, the Coordinator reviews, interprets and applies directives and guidelines in order to identify complexities and conflicts between State Approving Agency (SAA) and UC system wide procedures. In addition, the coordinator prepares the Veterans Benefits area within the Office of the Registrar for audit reviews and distributes benefit information to and collaborates with a broad range of campus officials regarding student-veterans' resource needs.

The Veteran's Benefits Coordinator is an experienced professional familiar with student record based concepts who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field. The incumbent applies a level of breadth and depth with student record and service delivery practices, policies, and regulations, and independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function. May provide work direction and training to a less experienced colleagues and student workers.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Thorough knowledge of policies, regulations, and practices with student records services. Working knowledge of a Registrar's Office in Higher Education and its functions and objectives, their interrelationships, and their relationship to functions of other campus administrative units.

  • Ability to work with people from diverse cultures. Utilizes excellent constituent service skills with all interactions. Ability to counsel, advise, disseminate veteran benefits information, educate staff and administration, make referrals for students and staff over a wide range of subjects relating to the veterans benefits process, eligibility requirements, navigating through university-wide administration, with good communication skills while utilizing professionalism and confidentiality. In cases of dealing with students in crisis or with sensitive financial or family issues, able to counsel and handle difficult situations with sensitivity and responsiveness to student needs and knowing when to make appropriate referrals if needed.

  • Strong problem identification, critical thinking, and problem solving skills; judgment and decision-making ability. Ability to assess processes and implement improvements.

  • Ability to apply thorough knowledge of policies to a variety of individual situations. Recommends procedures to ensure compliance in a diverse learning community. Demonstrated ability to interpret and appropriately apply regulations, policies, and procedures, and ability to adapt to changes in same.

  • Ability to analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of processes and to make recommendations for process improvement. Be able to write recommendations and present for review and implementation. Be able to develop and design written training materials for disseminating policy and procedures with the goal of the overall improvement of staff expertise and knowledge and of service to students and throughout campus.

  • Thorough knowledge of University policies, processes, and procedures and of Federal and California laws pertaining to the privacy rights of students and access to student information.

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. Active listening skills. Customer service orientation. Interpersonal skills. Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.

  • Thorough knowledge of common University-specific computer application programs and productivity software.

  • Strong ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with campus departments, UC campuses, and external agencies.

  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills including tact, diplomacy, and flexibility in interaction with persons from diverse units, including faculty and administration.

  • Thorough knowledge of particular Registrar core functions (e.g., degree requirements, special enrollment, veterans' benefits, and residency). Demonstrated ability to analyze impact of proposed curriculum and policy changes on enrollment services, summer session programs, and other registration functions.

  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple assignments and tasks; ability to set and work with changing priorities. Ability to work with frequent interruptions.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain a productive cohesive working team and work effectively as a member of a team.

  • Demonstrated ability to provide the best customer service and student support experience to all stakeholders.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Job offer is contingent upon a satisfactory clearance based on background check results.

  • Duties may require direct contact with children (defined as individuals under the age of 18). Completion of the Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act (CANRA) form is required.

  • Must be prepared to provide the best customer service and student support experience to all stakeholders.

  • Available to work evenings/weekends during peak periods; some domestic travel may be expected.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $63,800 - $111,600 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $30.56 - $53.45

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
